The columnist is Debra Saunders. I can't stand her, but it helps you see that the kind of heat that is building on McClintock.

this a.m. and was essentially ridiculed as being naive by some, who believe that Rove is all-powerful and in control of the whole process.

Hey, they may be right. Honestly, I don't know. I was never a fly on the wall during any of the meetings. But the circumstantial evidence seems to suggest either that McClintock is beyond Rove's touch, somehow- OR that Rove and co don't really give a rat's ass what happens to California to the extent that it could simply slide off into the ocean for all they care.

I side with the latter more than the former- but again, I could be wrong.

17. smart money says McClintock will stay in the race

I've seen some dem politicians that definitely appear to be "in the know" be asked about the recall. This was weeks ago and people were talking of Davis possibly resigning to avoid the recall and putting Bustamante in as Gov. These politicians were asked about that possibility and about the Dem candidates and the Repug candidates.

They said that Davis "would never" resign. They said Davis would fight to the bitter end. They said if you know Davis, you know he would never resign.

They said weeks ago that they foresaw every significant Repug candidate withdrawing out of the race in favor of Ahnold, except McClintock. They said if you know McClintock, you'd know that McClintock is an idealogue and the traditional fundamentalist right-wing Repug that the bible thumpers will back to the end. They said he won't back out, even if the Repugs pressure him. I've watched McClintock be interviewed about this recently, and he definitely seems like he is in for the duration.

I hope he stays in.
