Gay couple bashed in Santa Fe, N.M.
Three Santa Fe, N.M., men have been accused of beating a gay man unconscious while yelling antigay slurs. James Maestas, 21, of Santa Fe remained hospitalized Tuesday, but hospital officials would not release information about his condition at his family's request. A second man, Joshua Stockham, 24, of Albuquerque was treated for minor injuries and released.

Gabriel Maturin, 20, and Isaia Medina, 19, face charges of aggravated battery, conspiracy, and battery. David Trinidad, 17, whose case is in children's court, faces similar charges plus a count of criminal damage to property, Assistant District Attorney Heidi Pircher said. Trinidad currently is on probation for raping a 4 1/2-year-old boy, she said.

Just in case you missed it: Trinidad currently is on probation for raping a 4 1/2-year-old boy

Gee, it makes me wonder if the words "child molester" were among the anti-gay slurs Trinidad and his pals were yelling when they beat up the gay couple.

 Even if the phrase was in the bashers' vocabulary, it's doubtful they would know the definition of "irony."

1. I'm wondering if childhood sexual abuse might be cause for homophobia
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 01:10 PM by soleft
In cases where religion bears no influence in a person's homophobia - I wonder if people who are homophobic, especially in cases where it's expessed violently, were sexually abused as children.

The fact that allegedly raped a child leads me to think he's repeating a cycle of violence against children. Sexual orientation doesn't have anything to do with it. And it's not excusing the crime. But if there were more emphasis placed on healing victims of sexual abuse, we might see more cycles broken, and perhaps less homophobia.

2. I don't care why he does it
He needs to be locked up where he can't do it again.

It's obvious he's a repeater and that he's seen no need to change.

3. But will his victim get the supports he needs so he does not repeat
the cycle?

Obviously predators need to be imprisoned.
