Wal-Marts newest victims....................The City
"In its continuing, relentless growth around the globe, Wal-Mart Stores has arrived at a new frontier: the city. Plans are under way to build a store in downtown Dallas much different from the typical one-level, stand-alone Wal-Mart store in front of an ocean-size parking lot. This urban Wal-Mart is on two levels, with underground parking and a storefront facade."

"These new-style Wal-Marts won’t just look different; they will also sell different products and cater to a population that may not have the luxury of a car to carry all their purchases home. The stores will stock more merchandise in easy-to-carry boxes, for instance. Their gardening centers will carry smaller plants, and the sporting goods departments will feature less outdoor sports equipment and more of the urban variety."

“In metropolitan areas, folks shop in a certain way,” Williams said. “They’re going to take those sacks on the bus with them and carry them home.”

5. Pardon me for saying so, but catering to a specific audience
is smart business sense. In these days of one-store-fits-all, it's surprising to see them adapting.

Wal-Mart deserves criticism for a lot of things, perhaps even most things. Catering to a specific audience, even if their stated "making things easier" intent is merely ostensive, isn't one of them.

7. I don't think you get it
Of course WalMart has good business plans--if you don't mind a company that locks its employees in its stores at night.

But what will happen to the mom and pop stores that cities so desperately need? Even Guiliana recognized the contributions those small entrepreneurs made to New York.

9. Reminds
Me of the scene from Return of the King with the orcs battering down the gates of Gondor.

"No matter what comes through that gate, you are soldiers of Gondor!"

14. I heard a rather interesting Sam's Club ad today.
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 06:21 PM by Clark2008
It was advertising to small businesses and said, "because you carry the weight of the economy on your shoulders."
I had to laugh, because, the small business DOES carry the weight of the tax burdeons on their shoulders since those large corporations - like Sam's Club - get all kinds of tax breaks and enticements. :eyes:
What tripe!
