And one day * was speaking on tv and fumbling as usual and she asked me, "Mommy, why is that man so STUPID?" A few days later she started calling him the bad President.

It's sad that 5 year olds can figure out this stuff so quickly but most of the people in this country are too dumb to see things the way they truely are.

11. I ran for VP in fourth grade

and lost to the "popular kid" even though he was dumb as dirt. That single event shaped my view of the inner workings of politics all the way into my adult life. Gradeschool voters act exactly like republicans. In hindsight, I probably learned more by losing.

I once got in trouble for protesting vote-buying (giving kids candy as part of a campaign). So I made a sign that said "Don't let your vote be bought...don't vote for <name withheld> and <name withheld>."

7. When I was 5 Kennedy was President and shot the following year

I thought he was the most wonderful man. The entire nation was tuned to his energy. Some of the first words I ever read were "Be all you can be, read". When Kennedy spoke it was like poetry. No President since has had the gift of language that man had.

Also Caroline and I are the same age, I really identified with Kennedy as a father figure type. It was so tragic when he was shot. I truly grieved for the first time in my life.
