New Military Ad: WAR = FUN

Anyone see that ad for the military? I assume it's new.

A group of young snowboarders is lost in a snowstorm on a mountain. Some "leader" takes out the GPS and leads the way... segue to the leader of a squad of bombers on a mission.

I have seen many of these. One very sickening one was the "if you join the Air Force you'll be an astronaut" bullshit ad I saw once.

6. Man, all I was ever offered was

A pair of Army tube socks if I would just sit and talk with the recruiter (when I was in high school). I laughed at him before hanging up the phone. Now if I could be going snowboarding or into space, I might have changed my attitude! :)

There was one a few week ago where a young black kid is talking to his father who is working on the house. And the kid informs his father that he decide to do something with his future and it breaks away to an army logo.

Marketers probably got the idea or war = fun from the marine general.

Being too smart to be propagandized and old to enlist... as an avid gamer... I wonder how good a game it is? I'm almost tempted to order it if the reviews are OK. I'll just be sure not to tell any of my friend's teenage sons about it. I'm most interested in whether there's any subtle subtext in this game that others don't have.

It originally came out in 7-02... and while it's been improved.. it's still a free game and not sure what sort of ad budget it has. I'd forgotten about it until now. Here's some info if you haven't seen this already: http://www.pcgameworld.com/story.php/id/4913

And no I didn't get the JFK game.... this year's biggies are Call of Duty, Doom3 and Half Life 2. Got distracted with the Doomsday revamping of the original Doom... check it out if you're an old Doomer.

9. I guess I'm more worried about how videogames....

I guess I'm less worried about this particular game and more worried about how videogames generally blur the distinction between entertainment and reality.... and how impressionable teens who have spent 5 years playing violent war games... or games like Vice City... are hard wiring their brains to get a thrill out of killing. I've watched a friend's son grow up on these games and it scares me to think he's getting his drivers license. He's not fit to make life and death decisions. Another friend's soon wants to join the army. I should never have given him a copy of Ghost Recon for his birthday.

next time you're at the supermarket, take a look at the videogame magazines. Guaranteed you'll find ads to join the Army all over them. I know cause I subscribe to some of them and it makes me nauseous to see them.

The video games are horrible too.

My friends and family in Europe and South America keep asking me why Americans seem to LOVE killing and violence so much... :(
