7. n/t actually means no text.
when someone just uses the title line. eom means end of message, i believe. same thing.

lol? that's laughing out loud. and variant forms (rotflmao, rolling on the floor laughing my ass off)

then there's lihop and mihop, mostly used in the 911 forums...means let it happen on purpose, and made it happen on purpose.

8. I'm thankful whenever someone asks this
I was such an ignorant newbie that I refused to ask and finally figured it out when someone else asked. Welcome to DU

A few more you've probably figured out:

* is Bush. We use it with the intent he'll go down in history as the man who came to office without winning election. Hence, he'll always have a footnote.

Tweety is Chris Matthews. I've read the explanation many times but it still makes little sense.

Pickles is Laura Bush. Supposedly that's what * calls her.

Bunnypants and the derivations are our fearless leader....*

Media Whore of the year is Russert...OK that's a new one and mine

11. Jump The Shark is a television term from jumptheshark.com
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 05:20 PM by Hissyspit
It refers to when a television show goes from pretty good to absolute crapdom. It's origin is as a reference to the episode of "Happy Days" when Fonzie jumped a shark tank in his motorcycle, or was it on skis?, I believe in an episode filmed in Hawaii. It was the point many saw the show, which was pretty good when it started, as going complete shit. To use the term in reference to anything - U.S., Bush administration, mainstream media, whatever - is to analogously say something good or effective has hit the point of no return.

From the website www.jumptheshark.com :
"It's a moment. A defining moment when you know that your favorite TV show has reached its peak. That instant that you know from now on. It's all downhill. Some call it the climax. We call it jumping the shark."

By the way, I saw the "Fonzie Jumps Over the Shark" episode when it originally aired and even as a kid, I thought the show had long since started sucking, so there's always some debate about when exactly the shark jump takes place. One of the reasons it was so stupid was that they had already done a Fonzie motorcycle jump episode.

WHY * was used for Bush. I knew it was, it just didn't make any sense.

i assumed it was to indirectly refer to him. so we don't have the gov't knocking on our doors.

19. Kurt Vonnegutt in "Deadeye Dick" described the asterisk as the
universal symbol for an asshole. *
This would be more effective with a big font.

25. Breakfast Of Champions...
...is where that first showed up. It was a drawing, so the lines were more squiggily, coming out from the center, but he referred to it looking like an asterisk.

Something I've always wanted to do, but never got around to, is have a bumper sticker made that says:

Back Off,*!

Mabel's other half, Bokonon

30. Never was able to hang on to my Vonnegutt books, someone
always wanted to read them, so I will take your word for the source. Welcome to DU. I know Bokonon is from "Cat's Cradle" which I read my freshman year in college (1965-1966). I remember more about it than more recent books of Vonnegutt's I've read, which says something about aging.

21. I always assumed that it meant people didn't what to have to type his name
like not wanting to speak it. The idea of a footnote never occurred to me, but in a way, it can carry both those meanings.

29. End Of Month
It is an old mainframe acronym for running batch jobs for the EOM.

Around here, a new generation has hyjakked it for end of message.
