do you think FAIR or Media Matters serve any purpose?
I just got an alert from FAIR saying something like "USA Today covers for Bush's SS distortions".

Well, duh. Is there anyone who subscribes to FAIR that DOESN'T realize that McPaper and all the rest of Big Media print the WH's version of every issue?

Dunno what purpose FAIR and MM serve at this juncture.

1. If they don't no one else will call the GOP on their repeated lies...

6. But they're never referenced by Big Media,
so who are they reaching besides me and the rest of the converted?

2. They are extremely helpful as a reference tool
They are like factcheck.org.

We know they lie, but sometimes we want to know the specific lies so we can combat the myth of the liberal media. I quote mediamatters quite a lot on other forums.

3. Not sure either, except
to point out the obvious with sources cited for those of us who know something isn't right with our media, but don't have the time or resources to gather up all the evidence. Looks like they'd do something with what they know. I'd like to see that.

4. Documentation...
...someone's got to do it.
Also, we can talk about right-wing liars until we're blue in the face and no one really notices, but when FAIR or MMFA talk about them it gets under their skin.

5. FAIR produces Counterspin, a very good radio program
I subscribed to their newsletter but found it a little dated.

They have done some excellent studies and great Counterspin programs -- worth passing on to others, and often launching me into writing a letter to the editor (of my local paper) or to a network.

7. I think there doing good...
There are plenty of free-thinking people who seek the truth and they help rescue the truth. The more doing this the better.

9. Yes, I do...
...
I just got an alert from FAIR saying something like "USA Today covers for Bush's SS distortions".

Well, duh. Is there anyone who subscribes to FAIR that DOESN'T realize that McPaper and all the rest of Big Media print the WH's version of every issue?

Well, duh. If you already know everything about this issue, then you should stop subscribing to their alerts. It is voluntary.

IMO: They do very good analysis of the steno-media. It's not just a matter of alerting one to the fact that most of the popular U.S. media is failing in their responsibility, they also provide one with the ammunition to present to others who aren't as enlightened as you claim to be.

Imagine trying to explain/prove the bias of the popular media without such resources, unless one is the offspring of Marshall McLuhan (or some even more relevant reference: this isn't even my area of expertise and even I can see the value that FAIR and MMFA provide).

So TOJ, if you have outgrown FAIR and MMFA, please let us know about the more superior media analysis resources you discover or invent.

10. Do Accuracy In Media and other such lie-filled groups serve any purpose?
No, and thats why we need groups like MM and FAIR to fill the truth void. And there needs to be MORE of them, not less, as you seem to be advocating.
