Will Deepthroat be vindicated in your eyes?
Now that Deepthroat is apparenly on his last legs, there are two options: he is either now a very influential and famous Washington insider, or, less glamorously and probably more likely, he was some mid level technocrat who was trusted with too much knowledge.

But assuming for a second that he DOES turn out to be Rehenquist or Poppy Bush, will that affect your opinion of the man? If it turns out Rehnquist is responsible for taking down Nixon, will you think of him differently than you do now?

1. If it was Rehnquist, I would not think differently of him, even if he
was Deep Throat. What he did for watergate pales to his crimes in ignoring the law and the constitution and appointing the boy blunder as weed in chief.

If R, poppy must have had a lot of poop on him and that is why he has been doing their bidding. His crimes today cannot be forgiven because of his talking in the 70's.

4. Exactly. Poppy Bush will still be the kingpin of our worst troubles.
Edited on Sun Feb-06-05 04:33 PM by NEOBuckeye
Shakespeare said it best: "One may smile, and smile, and be a villian."

Nothing is pure or altruistic about George Herbert Walker Bush. Nothing. He is a nasty, nasty, putrid asshole. For all we know, Bush bringing down Nixon may have been just part of his plan to consolidate power into his own set of "righter, tighter, whiter hands".

But whether or not he actually was DT, I'll say it again, George Herbert Walker Bush is rotten to the core. If The Devil is in the details, then Poppy Bush has met him there.

2. how do we know Deep Throat is on his last legs?
Sorry, but I must've missed something. Did Woodward or Bernstein say that DT is dying or something?

6. Yes
Woodward announced the Deep Throat is on his/her last legs, and will announce the identity soon.

9. It must be someone terminally ill then
I can't believe Woodward would announce that someone is going to die soon if they were just old.

It reminds me of the Monte Python "Bring Out Yer Dead" routine. The person who is Deep Throat knows who he is. I doubt there's someone out there right now saying "I'm not dead yet. I'm getting better" while Woodward announces he's near death.

and for those who want the script:

******

Seriously, though, I believe it was Dean who let it slip that Deep Throat is at death's door. I'm not sure that information was intended to be made public.

12. I thought the announcement was supposed to come today
I think Keith Olbermann mentioned it and it seems like I heard it somewhere else, too.
Was it supposed to be today or contingent upon Deep Throat's death?

8. No. It makes them MORE Machiavellian. Bush wanted to run for prez in 80
and knew that Nixon's mad streak was blowing it for whoever ran after him. So, to make it happen sooner than later, Watergate blew up faster than it would have without DT's guidance.

The Bush family has always been extraordinary manipulative and blackmailers, even with members of their own party. ESPECIALLY with members of their own party.

Anyone believe that Reagan WANTED Bush to be vice-president? He was FORCED into making him VP.

I'm gonna be pissed. If we've had to suffer under these two nazi fuckers for all this time and Woodward could of outed them. Jesus, that would be unfuckinbelievable.

14. Please, Deep Throat is just a 'literary device' for attributing
information without disclosing a source. Today Woodstein could possibly be fired for that. Post #10 of http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=103&topic_id=103887#

along with the embedded links go a long way toward clarifying what Woodstein intentionally seek to keep hidden until THEY are long gone from this earth.

Read Renata Adler's "In Search of the Real Nixon Scandal" from Dec 1976 Atlantic Monthly. The money trail was fleshed out in a House Banking cmte investigation, and never quite got finished. Wonder why, when the payoffs were going to fellow US congressmen. That $350K and the footnoted "Chilean investors" and Mexican bank in "All The President's Men" never really got to follow the money, did they ?

15. I bought all the bs of Woodward and Bernstein.
I assumed that DT was a man who was helping the country.

Knowing what I now know about Woodward, I can't believe anything he says or writes.

To think that it would be Rehnquist or Poppy is really repulsive.

DO NOT TRUST ANYONE IN THE GOVERNMENT AS LONG AS THERE IS STILL A BUSH SOMEWHERE.

17. What you said...
I agree 100% -- Woodward IMO was just a mouth piece used by the folks that wanted to get rid of Nixon...don't misunderstand, I am not a Nixon fan, but in hindsight he looks like a saint compared to the bush family (IMO he does anyway)

31. I don't see as he had a motive
the Watergate scandal broke before the 72 election and Ford didn't become Vice President till at least 73. Also Ford never wanted to be Pres or V. Pres he was content to stay in Congress.

33. No
Not if it really is somebody like Rehnquist or Poppy, who did incalculable harm to the American system. It would prove that the ousting of Nixon was a coup d'etat in what we would now see to be a continuing series of such, all setting the stage for our current Evil Empire and the end of constitutional government.

We already know that the press is resting on its Watergate laurels, figures that they've done their bit regarding establishment corruption, and no longer feel any responsibility to point out the more recent vintages. Indeed, they barely reported anything about Reagan, not even his very public gaffes about how trees cause pollution, and instead gave him credit for the very "Teflon" they all enabled. If it turns out that Nixon was gamed by the Bushies, then all we'll know is that the plot to take over America has been in operation pretty much all our (adult) lives.

It'll certainly give new relevance to the JFK assassination question.
