Pundits called Dems' reaction during Bush address "unprecedented," but Republicans booed Clinton

Media figures have falsely claimed that Democrats' audible disapproval of President Bush's misleading claim in his February 2 State of the Union address that Social Security will be "exhausted and bankrupt" in 2042 was "unprecedented." In fact, Republicans routinely booed and hissed during President Clinton's State of the Union addresses.

Many hosts and pundits suggested the Democrats' reaction was the first of its kind:

TED KOPPEL (ABC host): When the president talked about the bankruptcy of Social Security, there were clearly some Democrats on the floor who thought that that was taking it too far. And they did something that, apparently, no one at this table has ever heard before. They booed.

snip

JOE SCARBOROUGH (former U.S. representative (R-FL) and MSNBC host): After the Democrats booed and hissed, Republicans were on the floor saying, you know, we never once did that to Clinton. So every time he would talk about Social Security, the roars got a little louder. And they got behind their president.

3. It's about time Dems set some precedents of their own!!!
And they did hiss at Clinton. But should they have booed Clinton durin his SOTUS? They were hammering him with impeachment, smears, and other investigations. Besides, Clinton never said anything in his STOUS to call for boos. He was saying and doing things to get the country back on track. They only thing the Republicans really were at odds with was raising taxes on the wealthy which helped the deficit and Clinton taking action in Bosnia and Kosovo which got rid of "tyrants" with minimal loss of American lives. Now Bush has undone the budget surplus and cost the lives of thousands whith his unnecessary and illegal invasion of Iraq.

8. "A Fact Sheet on Booing at the SOTU" (BuzzFlash News Alert)
http://www.buzzflash.com/alerts/05/02/ale05027.html
(1997 info included at link)

<snip>
1998: Republicans Booed Clinton's Medicare Proposal Clinton's health-care initiatives, chiefly in the form of a medical bill of rights, found support on both sides, especially his attack on managed-care health-care plans. ... Clinton's proposal to expand Medicare to allow Americans as young as 55 to buy into the system drew shouts of "no" and some boos from Republicans during his speech.

1997: Republican's Booed Clinton's Opposition to the Balanced Budget Amendment The Republican response was far warmer than perhaps any of Clinton's previous four State of the Union speeches. Time after time, Republicans jumped to their feet to join Democrats in applauding the president. Only once did they unmistakably and collectively show their disapproval--when Clinton spoke disparagingly of a GOP-sponsored constitutional amendment to balance the budget. Many Republicans hissed and some booed.

1995: Republicans Booed Clinton and Walked Out During Speech. The upheaval wrought by the Republican election landslide was visible throughout the president's State of the Union address - from the moment Speaker Newt Gingrich took the gavel to the striking silence that often greeted Clinton from the GOP. At one point, Republicans even booed. About 20 of them left as Clinton went on and on for an hour and 20 minutes.

9. Republicans have long been boorish at Dem SOTU's...
Eleanor Roosevelt criticized Republican members of Congress after Roosevelt's 1941 SOTU for refusing to applaud. The immediate reaction makes for interesting reading.

According to Doris Kearns Goodwin, Republican representative Edith Nourse told the House that Mrs. Roosevelts suggestion that all members applaud "presents a new concept in American constitutional theory. Under our form of government, members of Congress are not elected to applaud the official utterances of the White House, but to frame legislation. The suggestion of a duty to applaud appears to me a dangerous and unwholesome manifestation of war hysteria." Representative Hoffman of Michigan charged that "the Roosevelts apparently have in some way gotten the idea they are entitled to receive homage and applause as our King and Queen."

The Republicans of today should review the above.

11. They "booed"...
Four years of lies, manipulations, fraud, pressure, 2 (two) presidential elections where fundamental democratic principles were violated. Four years of missed opportunities to stand up and oppose, like just a couple of senators (2%) did. Four years of unprecented mis-management of strictly everything in the country and anywhere outside.
Thanks for expressing so powerfully the people's frustration. That's very promising.

16. Expressing Disapproval For The Lies Of George W Bush?
I think it is more than high time Mr. Bush was treated with the kinds of disrespect his party has been treating Democrats these past few election cycles.

But certainly that would not be what the administration is looking for...

Perhaps Mr. Bush and his handlers would prefer that the Senate chamber be filled with the kinds of audiences they recruit for his public appearances? Or maybe something even more special due to the importance of the occasion. How about potted plants that cheer?

32. since the 80's political honeymoons have become "unprecedented"..
remember when Republicans tried to convince Clinton during the impeachment hearings to "delay" his State of the Union address..why wasn't this labeled unprecedented by the media? Republicans eagerly booed and hissed Clinton in all of his addresses, but the media doesn't give a shit! The most unprecedented action occurred when networks showed a split screen during a Clinton State of the Union address..as a jury rendered its verdict during the O.J. Simpson trial.

When will the media show a split screen with bloodshed in Iraq during Bush's speech? When will Bush act as a uniter and not the divider of this country?
