Once extremist Ron Wilson attended his first meeting of South Carolina's state Board of Education last week, his critics acknowledged that the former commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is on the board to stay.

But so is the furor over his appointment, not only because of his racist and anti-Semitic reputation, but also because he was arguably the least qualified among the Anderson County applicants for the job.

'A little short ... on qualifications'
Wilson was appointed to the 17-member state education board in early December by the Anderson County legislative delegation on a 4-3 vote. He earned his high school diploma in Sharon, Tenn., and attended a two-year machinist course at a vocational technical school in Mackenzie, Tenn., according to his application for the state board.

"There are many people in the community who are concerned about Wilson's affiliation with extremist groups," West said, including Wilson's ties to the segregationist Council of Conservative Citizens and the League of the South.

Evidently, he has the right qualifications to determine school curriculum's in the heart of the Bible Belt. It galls me that a "Christian" state like South Carolina would tolerate this.

Click this link, to see how widespread these groups are in the bible belt. Click on South Carolina to see how predominate they are there.

1. We don't 'tolerate' it
I fight these beliefs every day... if you know anything about SC the upstate is very white and very red and very Republican.... please do not paint all of SC accepting behavior and board members such as this.

2. Thank you for fighting those beliefs every day.
I wish more folks would do it.

I do hope that the good folks of South Carolina will revolt and boot this charlitin off the school board. If they do not, well, then it is not I who is painting anything with a broad brush; it would merely be a fact.

This story just happened to occour in South Carolina. It could have easily happened anywhere else. I would have posted it if it happened in New Jersey, but New Jersey is not known as a "Moral" part of the Bible Belt either.

I am grateful for courageous folks like yourself who do stand up for genuine morality. The world would be a much better place if more folks like yourself did.
