I Saw Oliver North Today in Person. Some Observations.
Edited on Fri Jan-28-05 01:08 AM by stopbush
The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce threw its annual Vegas Preview today at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center. Our CoC is a total hotbed of RW nutjobs. Recent speakers at their events in the past two months have included Ben Stein and Ari Fleisher. They regularly criticize Dem policies in their weekly business rag.

Well I guess that they thought it was a good idea to invite Col Criminal to the show. I didn't stay for his keynote rant, but I did see him at the Thunderbirds' booth, signing copies of his book. A few observations:

1. he's not that tall. Maybe 6', tops. Probably shorter
2. he looks a lot like Alfred E Newman. No kidding. TV cleans him up something fierce
3. considering everything I wrote above about our CoC, there sure wasn't much of a line in front of Ollie waiting for autographs (ha!)

BTW - I resisted walking up to him and delivering a few choice words. I was representing my company, after all, and - in truth - the sorry little shit wasn't worth the effort.

5. "he looks a lot like Alfred E Newman"
I recall that he is more like 5-6 or so, he has bad teeth and a bad pasty complexion with a goofed up expression on his kisser.

9. He is one of the worst pieces of trash I know of.
He makes G. Gordon Liddy look like a patriot and a saint in comparison.

When he was on Randi's show, she brought up his felony convictions in the Iran/Contra treason he committed, and he tried to use word games to say that it never happened (it was later overturned on a technicality, and the whole Iran/Contra crew of thieves was given a blanket pardon by the Ringleader, George Bush, Sr.)

He is in a state of serious denial about the crimes he committed against this country and the people of Central America.

12. All These Felons Feel "Vindicated"
I tend to peg North's testimony as to when the media started to turn to the dark side. This was just before Rush & Newt, and all of us expected that North would be taken apart for running an illegal war against a Congressional resolution. Instead, he blew lie after lie at that committee in his military uniform and soon all the talk was about Ollie and not Iran-Contra. I knew it was trouble then...but no where near what I could have ever imagined.

If you want to advance in GOOP punditry...get convicted or involved in some scandal then play "victim". It's worked for North, Liddy, Rushbo and now Armstrong Williams. The truth be damned, just as long as you spew the right wing line, that's all that counts.

You did the right thing not to make a scene or say anything. It wouldn't have done any good...other than to make this oxygen thief look like a victim.

13. David Hackworth had a few choice words about Herr Colonel...
LET ME TRY to describe Oliver North in a few fast bursts. He's a jackass. He is so preposterous that there is a temptation to laugh at him. He's smarmy, a flatter, a brownnoser. He's also a twisted impostor, a drugstore Marine with an apparent compulsion to bullshit just about all the time.

But while he tries to fool people with his fantasies, he is also very easy to fool. One thread runs through his performance--getting conned. The Iranians conned him, the contras conned him, the crooked arms dealers conned him and even Manuel Antonio Noriega conned him.

No wonder he's a RW hero.
