Last night I saw a clip of "The Passion of Christ"
and it seemed to be a scene from the Sermon on the Mount, so all I can gather is that the RW fundies that saw it, were not taking in the words (reading) but were more enthralled by the violence and blood...What is anyone else's take on this?

1. Sure it wasn't "Life of Brian?"
They featured the Sermon on the Mount in that film.

blessed are the cheesemakers? the Greek?

11. You're right
its pretty sad the "The Life of Brian" - a satire about religion and blindly following authority - has more philosphy and real lessons in it than "The Passion".

12. Python wanted to make sure we didn't confuse Brian with Jesus
although I understand the working title of the screenplay was, originally, "Jesus Christ's Lust for Glory."

Now THAT would've been a controversial film. But, IIRC, a Python member said that they decided "Jesus was actually a really decent bloke."

this is all from memory, some restrictions apply, not valid in Nebraska...

2. I saw the Passion...
and I think it was a well done depiction of ONE ASPECT of Christ's life.
I was dissapointed that there wasn't more, but then again, I think the focus was the passion, hence the title.

I was very disturbed by the level of violence and gore, and sadistic glee...but I think that also was a good reminder of what Christ went through towards the end.

But, I agree, I would rather see another movie, as competently directed, on the actual teachings and what Jesus really came down for...

6. I agree with you. What I found stunning
was, as I was leaving the theatre, people were saying to each other "I had no idea he suffered so much" and crap like that.

I kept thinking, "What did you think 'crucified' meant?"

5. Did you see the part where Jesus invented the chair?
:eyes: I wanted to like the movie. It sounded like a bold experiment.

7. yeah, I found that completely bizarre.
I don't know what the heck Gibson was getting at with that?
certainly not accurate, and didn't really have any deeper meaning that i could fathom.

8. Jesus invented a chair in the movie?
Or was Gibson saying that Jesus invented the concept of the chair? There were no chairs before Jesus? I find that hard to believe.

9. I'm shocked that Bill O'Really hasn't pointed out what a stoned slacker
Jesus was if he invented a chair.

Sadistic pun entirely intended :D

13. Yea
It went vaguely like this: He's building a tall table and Mary sees it and is confused. She comments on the height and asks if people have to stand around it to use it. Then Jesus tells her hes going to make things to sit on and she says it'll never catch on.

10. I think the movie tells us more about
"The Fetish of the Mel" rather than anything about Christianity.

So many of Mel's movies (Lethal Weapon 2 with Mel tied up and shocked ... Braveheart with Mel beaten drawn and quartered, etc.) have some really sadistic elements. No doubt Mel believes in his version of Christianity deeply ... but I also think a 2+ hour movie of unrelenting sadism and torture tells a lot about Mel's secret fantasies and fetishes.

Sure, crucifiction is brutal ... but dyssentary is ugly, too, and I sure wouldn't want to see a two-hour cinematic exploration of the subject directed by a corprophiliac.

To me (and this is coming from a liberal theological perspective) a film that focuses on Jesus' death and gives only a cursory glimpse of his life and teachings misses the essence of Christianity.

14. Apparently Gibson is known to be into S&M gay pornography
At least, stories about this were all over the internet when The Passion came out. I won't speculate about what this might mean.

16. There were several flashback scenes like that.
The few flashbacks in the movie showed Jesus being caring, loving and non-judgemental. Of course, the scenes came in between the beating and crucifixion scenes.

You never hear the rightwing fundies say anything about the flashback scenes.

20. I've gone this long without watching it
I can go the rest of my life without watching it.

Mel is a sick puppy with some serious *issues*. :freak:

I don't subscribe to the Gospel according to Mel.
