Roemer lashes out in DNC chairman race
Memo criticizes candidate's opposition to abortion rights

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (CNN) -- "The campaign for Democratic chairman turned contentious over the weekend when Tim Roemer lashed out at criticism of his views on abortion and accused opponents of negative campaigning.

The candidate told a gathering in St. Louis that he wanted to have "a conversation" on issues but that he is "having trouble doing this because of negative campaigning and litmus tests. His voice rising, Roemer added, "I like a good fight. But don't put my arms behind me. Give me a chance to talk about my values. And don't litmus-test me."

Roemer's comments came at the opening of a candidates' forum at the Democratic National Committee Midwest Caucus on Saturday, a week after the former Indiana congressman formally entered the race"

SNIP.."Roemer aides said he was angry over an opposition research memo being circulated in Washington and Democratic circles that outlined his voting record, which sometimes did not follow party lines. Aides said they did not know who wrote the memo and whether it came from a rival for the party's chairmanship...."

1. The fact that he is so upset that people are looking at his record
tells you everything you need to know about the guy.

"Hey Tim, You're running to lead the fucking Democratic party! We have every right to look long and hard at your record and judge whether it is one of a good Democrat. So shut the fuck up you whiney bitch."

3. My pro-life views notwithstanding,
Roemer ought to able to stand his ground. He's got to find a way to bridge the gap. If he can't, then he's not fit for the kingdom.

18. Has nothing to do with pro-life. Roemer promotes privatization,
loves the idea of Social Security being disbanded, and he doesn't disagree with even one thing that the Bush Regime is doing.

Pro-life issue is only being used to fog up that this guy is in bed with the whole global capitalist gang.

Republican leadership just for mentioning the POSSIBILITY that he might CONSIDER leaning toward the pro-choice views of a judicial nominee.....
Why shouldn't we have the right to demand the same loyalty to our principles that the Repukes have??

Jenna to carry at the inauguration.

6. Roemer erects the straw man
"Roemer said Democrats should learn from the Republican Party, which has allowed former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to play prominent roles. Both of them support abortion rights.

'Republicans have a big tent; why can't we?' he asked."

I refuse to believe that Roemer is this dense. The Repugs let Rudy and Arnold into their tent because Rudy and Arnold are stars. They bring people into the tent with them, they don't send anyone running.

Roemer is already in the tent. No one is telling him to leave, he just can't be the ring-master. Whether Roemer likes it or not, the Democratic Party stands for women's rights. If the DNC chooses a leader who doesn't share that belief, many, many women are going to leave the party. Does Roemer think that he is going to lure anti-abortion people over from the Repugs? Why would they come? They like the anti-abortion party they already have just fine.

7. a very large number of pro lifers actually vote Democratic
Some are of the Kucinich (before he changed) mode while others are of the Romer mold. The fact is if all pro lifers voted for Bush with the rest of the votes unchanged Bush would have won around 63 to 37. In short more people who are functionally pro life vote Democratic than there are gays or Jews in the entire electorate.

16. Yes they have
and went down under Clinton. Abortions are somewhat economicaly sensitive and the economy under both Bush's was pretty bad.

8. Choice
It is not an issue if someone personally opposes abortion, but no self-respecting Democrat should oppose choice -- because it is a constitutional right -- like racial intermarriage, sending your children to the school of your choice, the right to attend integrated schools and many others. Is he really against choice or is he just personally opposed to abortion?

I'm sure Al From and the "New Dems" would love it.

20. Thanks for clarifying his voting record .
Sounds like he is not a real Democrat. He would not be able to get the majority of Democrats to support him.

He cannot lead our party. We won't follow him.

10. Tantrum disqualifies Roemer..what a pansy!
Terry M may not be the most popular guy around here but he was unflappable in media appearances and never resorted to unprofessional behavior in public, like tantrums about criticism.

This Roemer is a real queen. 'Oh, you evil people, looking at my record, researching it.'

He is on the faculty of the Merkatus program, some think tank at George Mason University. The program is almost all Uncle Miltie Friedman clones and worse. It's heavily funded by Richard M. Scaife, to the tune of millions. It's there to train right-wing shills.

Roemer, go away. You are weak and unfit for duty. Do not report!

12. His voting record says what he is for and against
it is fair and it is something that has to be done. Why have someone head your party if they don't hold the same values? Doesn't make sense to not look at his record.

14. My favorite lines
The candidate told a gathering in St. Louis that he wanted to have "a conversation" on issues...

"Give me a chance to talk about my values."

So we're supposed to take your word for it? We'll just listen to you TALK about the issues and not worry about your actual ACTIONS on the issues??

This guy is everything that is wrong about the Democratic party. He's a punk that should be shown the door.

17. I suppose Roemer would prefer it if we judged him on his hair.
What the fuck is he angry about? His voting record is the issue. Of course it's going to be reviewed.

And by the way, if the DNC chooses Roemer, I'm finished with it for good. Even a retarded chimpanzee could see the writing on the wall after this election, and it does NOT say "move to the right".
