I have Al Jazeera
Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 07:31 PM by TyeDye75
So I was flicking through the more obscure channels on my Sky subscription late last night and I was surprised to find Al Jazeera.

I was also surprised to see that the picture and sound wasnt poor quality like we are always lead to believe by other media outlets. The whole set up looked very proffesional and very western.

Except that is for the arabic dialouge and on screen graphics... unfortunately there were no subtitles so I couldent really comment on the actual quality of the content, but I still sat and watched it for about an hour.

I just wondered whether anyone else has seen the channel and what they thought of it.

3. SkyNews is Fox News of the UK
It is suprising that it would be on a Murdoch cable package anywhere.

I would say money (of course) is the reason. Take the profits but keep blasting the content on the other channels.

4. Sky news isnt quite as infuriating as Fox
but it definately pushes his agenda. I feel a little dirty paying a monthly Bill to Murdoch, but what can I say, I like my TV.

5. Translating Al Jazera is easy
1) Get two televisions
2) Place them side by side
3) Tune TV #1 to Al Jazera
4) Tune TV #2 to Fox News
5) Turn off the volume on TV #1
6) Hang a mirror on the wall behind TV #2
7) Turn TV# 1 to face the mirror
8) Turn TV# 1 upside down
9) Watch Al Jazera upside down and backwards while listening to Fox News

6. We actually have a second Sky connection up stairs
My family are complete TV junkies... so I could put Fox on really loud up stairs and then lie upside down on my sofa watching Al Jazeera downstairs.

7. Sky has a lot of other international news sources as well...
Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 07:52 PM by corksean
NBC, Fox News(hurl),Bloomberg, CNN, DW-5 (German),CCTV-9 (Chinese), and Euronews (Pan-European) all in English as well as Spanish and French Channels in their own language which carry regular news and current affairs. As regards Sky News IMO it is nothing like Fox News and shows no real discernible bias to one or other side. However this has a lot to do with the relative power of the Broadcast Regulator in the UK compared to the US. If they started along the Fox Right Wing track they could run into a whole heap of trouble, anything up to losing their Broadcast License.

Shit I almost forgot the best of all. The Islam Channel. Mostly in English it has Koranic teaching and recitations, Question & Answer programmes as well as teaching aids and childrens programming. How long do you think that would last Stateside?

9. Time-Warner in Minneapolis has CCTV-9
as well as the International Channel, which has newscasts from all over the world, mostly in their original languages.

They broadcast a fluffy Japanese news program at 9AM Central, but if I tune in early for that, I catch the end of Al-Jazeera. It almost makes me want to study Arabic, but that's far down in my language queue.
