Gun shy: are Dems finally getting the message?
Little by little, things are looking brighter.

Assault-weapons ban expiring in silence

The 1994 ban on assault weapons expires next year and with its renewal hardly guaranteed, gun-control advocates plan to keep the pressure on Congress.
But so far, none of the Democratic Party's presidential candidates has made gun-control a major thrust of the campaign, further dimming the prospects of passage of a tougher ban.
Bryan Miller, executive director of Ceasefire PA and Ceasefire New Jersey, recognizes that other issues, such as foreign policy and the economy, are unlikely to relinquish center stage.
"I'm not surprised to see politicians talk about other things," Mr. Miller said. "Our job is to bring it to the public, bring it to the politicians and get them to talk about it."
Sen. John Kerry, Massachusetts Democrat and presidential aspirant, was among the first to do so, dedicating part of his official candidacy-announcement speech Tuesday to gun control.

2. And you find this comforting?
Increased availability of high-capacity, high-power military-style weaponry is good why?

Two shots from an AK, into a deer, will leave you about as much usable meat as you get in a pound of burger, at the butcher's.

10. How is it a bad thing?
>Increased availability of high-capacity, high-power military-style >weaponry is good why?

How about restoring a level of trust for law abiding gun owners that
was taken from us 9 years ago?

>Two shots from an AK, into a deer, will leave you about as much >usable meat as you get in a pound of burger, at the butcher's.

What does hunting have to do with "Increased availability of high-capacity, high-power military-style weaponry"?

I've never hunted in my life nor have I ever had a desire to.
State laws vary but in most hunting with an AK or AR style rifle
is ileagal for a number of reasons: some ban the use of a semi-automatic rifle, the cartridge used is too underpowered, one can't use
a magazine capable of holding more than 5 rounds. An execption though
is that an accurized version of the AR-15 is popular with ranchers for varmint control.

12. In every damn way
That's what we need....more assault rifles for criminals.

"How about restoring a level of trust for law abiding gun owners that
was taken from us 9 years ago?"
Cry us a frigging river...30,000 dead Americans a year and another 60,000 wounded.

That the article is total fabrication and none of the quotes are accurate?

Here's another... http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2003-08-07-pilots-_x.htm

I suppose someone else you oppose is pulling the strings at USA Toady?
Ted Nugent, perhaps?

Gun-control debate gets muzzled

On the same day last month, five factory workers in Mississippi
were shot and killed by a co-worker and five people in a
family in Bakersfield, Calif., were killed by gunfire.

Not too long ago, dramatic slayings such as these would
have created a new chapter in the national debate over gun
control. There would have been angry speeches in
Congress and new proposals to crack down on firearms.

But today, there is mostly silence. Democrats, who believe that their calls for gun controls might have cost them the White House in 2000, are less willing to take on the gun lobby. Polls suggest that public
fears about terrorism have helped mute the debate.

Meanwhile, the gun industry is racking up legislative wins.
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, says there are
not enough votes in the House to renew Congress' 1994 ban
on certain assault weapons when it expires next year.

And now, gun rights supporters are closing in on what
probably would be their most enduring victory.

The Senate is close to passing a bill that would shield
firearms manufacturers and dealers from civil lawsuits
brought by victims of gun crimes. The measure, which the
House passed 285-140 as 63 Democrats voted with the
GOP majority, is an effort to shield the gun industry from the
type of lawsuits that have been successful against tobacco
and asbestos companies.

The popularity of the bill — it has 54 co-sponsors in the
Senate, including several top Democrats — underscores the
changed political dynamics of gun control. Senate Minority
Whip Harry Reid, D-Nev., has signed on, and Senate Minority
Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., might do so.
