Girl Power....
Yesterday while sledding my athletic 14 years old daughter was tackled and had her face rubbed in the snow by a male classmate who said "You aren't even a girl..." as he did so. It was not just rough houseing and it sounded like this kid was punishing my daughter for not "posing" on the sidelines with the other girls. My daughter is a top notch snowboarder and one of the only female skateboarders in the area. She can grind, ollie, kickflip, skate bowls and vert ramps. She is fearless on a snowboard. Everyone at school knows she is a awesome skater and most think that is really cool.

She has had run ins with these jerky kids who believe girls are all supposed to be little sex objects that pose looking like hookers waiting to service a john. It seems the most conservative city in Wisconsin lives up to it's reputation by fostering these backwards attitudes to new generations. (that is a whole topic for extended discussion)

I was pissed when I heard her tell me this when I picked her up at the hill..But then she smiled and said that she smashed snow in his face and and then kick him in the groin, to not worry and that she handled it. I looked over at her. Her face red, all 4'11" of her. She is tiny but decepetivly strong for her size.

I still told her she shouldn't kick people but to tell me or her mother about it. We'll call the parents. I told her what that boy did was sexual harrasment/abuse and should be delt with with actions other than violence.

BUt....If that kid was expecting to force her into "line" I guess he underestimated my daughter.

1. Good for her!
in my opinion, a kick in the groin was deserved. She was defending herself from a physical attack.

2. Tell your daughter
that a lady who went to law school when "girls" weren't supposed to do that - let's hear it for Affirmative Action - and who got called "lawyerette" by her law professors got revenge on all of them without kicking them in their groins.

Not exactly.

She just kicked their asses every other way when she got the chance.

Tell your daughter that she's absolutely wonderful.

Tell her Mom the same thing.

(And good for her for kicking him.)

4. good for her for standing up for herself!
fucking idiot bullies.

My opinion is that girls who are "tomboys" (I hate that term ... I should come up with a better one, like say, girls who enjoy using their natural physical abilities) make the best women when they grow up!

I can't stand those pussies who suck up to the ignorant boys because they have to be popular.

5. It has been a real battle...
For her. She loves to skate, and board...she still does the "beauty" thing and sometimes and we can see the conflict she has. There is a tone of social pressure coming at her from so many directions. Some of the other girls are mean to her for her ability. Others cheer her on. Fortunately she has more cheering for her than against her....from the boys, girls and adults.

I tell her how proud we are of her at every opportunity. Until she rolls her eyes and says..."Daaaad..stop getting all weepy.."

23. she'll come out all right I bet
she can do the "beauty thing" when it's appropriate ... like for special occasions, dates ... one can still be feminine and accomplished at sports! I used to hate it when the girls on my softball teams would show up for games in full makeup ... then whine during the game if they broke a nail.

I like to keep fancy hair-do and makeup for special occasions ... if I wore it everyday it wouldn't be special anymore! If I wore makeup for sports I'd end up looking like a clown once I started to perspire

I know how hard it can be, girls can be worse tormenters than the boys sometimes. I wonder how many of those girly-girls that tease her will end up pregnant, or mistreated in some way by those bully boys that they so admire now?

Girls that have sports and other activities in their lives are much less likely to quit school, much less likely to have unwanted pregnancies or become pregnant at very young ages. Sounds like her parents are doing a good job of guiding her ... just promise me you'll never, ever tell her to pretend she is less capable at anything than she really is, just to please some male!

7. Tell your daughter that this Ph.D. was told by her professors
that a girl shouldn't get a Ph.D. She should get married and shut up. Well, this girl got her Ph.D.,became a sucess, then got married, then had a kid.

Tell her not to let anyone tell her what she can or can't do.

But I think she already did that! Far out!

8. HOOORAY for your DAUGHTER!
The world needs more kids like her--the forces of misogyny want to crush girls. It's so sad to me that it seems so rare to see girls who refuse to do the "OK, two choices be a whore or a mommy, OK, fine by me...." dance.

Your daughter ROCKS!!! :yourock:
hmm, I wonder how we can encourage more girls to see that hate for what it is? Wish I had an answer.

13. Great Article in Slate recently about Sitcom wives
Basically asking why beautiful woman in Sitcoms all seem to be married to big, fat, obnoxious white guys. Some examples were:

- King of Queens
- Married to Jim
- Still Standing
- Listen Up

and I would throw in the new John Goodman "Center of the Universe" show.

Anyway, the point was that it seemed these women either had to marry a fat guy, or be a spinster.

I'm a male, but it seems that there has been a recent attempt to "put woman in their place". Look at the crap Hillary has had to put up with.

I have a 15 year old daughter, and she seems to be struggling with what the perceptions are as to who she is supposed to be. She is athletic, rarely wears make-up, and doesn't own a pair of shoes with a heal higher than a half-inch.

In the grand sceme of things though, I think what is important is to just be yourself. I married a beautiful woman (I really overkicked my punt coverage) who is more attractive and appealing in an old pair of shorts and tennis-shoes, than she is in a "satin teddy".

15. you raise a question that I think goes deep!
And dammit, I need to get offline now, so don't have the time or energy to put into the kind of thinking I'd like to give the subject!!!

But I'm glad to see a man who doesn't just selfishly go for the shallow take on the matter, you know "ugly guys get hot babes. The world is a 14 year old boy's sex fantasy. Works for me.----Oh, women aren't 2-dimensional cartoons that exist only for male entertainment?? Huh??"

Well, hope to see you later.

17. Way to go for your daughter!
And to you and your husband for raising someone who doesn't take any shit from anyone.

Check out this issue of Outside: http://outside.away.com/outside/toc/200312.html

I would kill to be in as great shape as Lokelani McMichael. She is a triathlete who also sea-kayaks, mountain climbs, and backcountry-skis and could kick every man's (that I know) ass. That issue is filled with other great examples of women athletes.

Don't let your daughter despair or give up. The school years don't last forever and that bully will find out soon enough that crap doesn't fly in the real world.

Don't piss off the snowboarding youth, they're lethal

Snowboarding (and skateboarding to?) seems to encourage strong individualism, I've noticed. Must be all the fresh air :D
