Jon Stewart was right, CNN says
That is why Jon Stewart, a comedian, is more credible than most news organizations. HE DA MAN!

Bye-bye Tucker Carlson and "Crossfire." We'll barely miss ya, if at all. Good luck at MSNBC, a losing-ground cable news organization.

Ya gotta read it, folks!

5. Jon Stewart was right
CNN/U.S. President Jonathan Klein sided yesterday with comedian Jon Stewart, who used a "Crossfire" appearance last fall to rip the program as partisan hackery. "I think he made a good point about the noise level of these types of shows, which does nothing to illuminate the issues of the day," Klein said in an interview. Viewers need "useful" information in a dangerous world, he said, "and a bunch of guys screaming at each other simply doesn't accomplish that."

<snip>

"There was zero fit between what he wanted to do and what we wanted to do," Klein said. "He's best suited to host a head-butting talkfest, and that's not the kind of program we wanted to do in prime time. . . . Our network is about roll-up-your-sleeves journalism, powerful storytelling."

8. "Powerful storytelling" I believe, but
I have my doubts about roll up your sleeves journalism, CNN seems mostly like another wall in the echo chamber.

11. Yes and I love the phrase
"powerful STORYTELLING" like the one about those WMD in Iraq. They told that story pretty powerfully!

17. " a bunch of guys screaming at each other"
I hope the rest of the networks follow. If so, there goes Tweety, pig faced Joe, and the rest of them. I sure hope that they are all getting the memo. This could very well go somewhere...and in our favor.

7. CNN is letting Tucker Carlson go ..
but Carlson is not really the problem. It is the news, or lack of, that is being reported, IMHO. I don't get the cable news networks. They see the success of Jon Stewart's show. If their concern is ratings I think if they reported the news in an impartial manner, and clearly explained who all the players are and their backgrounds, they would not have to worry about faux or if the white house gave them privileges. First of all, the white house is not giving up anything to CNN that is not first privy to faux, secondly there is nothing to distinguish CNN from faux really. It sure would be nice to see someone grow balls and say let's go back to the basics and simply report the news.

15. YES! In the words of Johm McLaughlin (ugh!
Tucker Carlson....."BUH--BYYYYYYYE!"

May this move be the first toward Carlson's career being "rolled up like a scroll and placed among the things that were once thought to be real."

16. Once upon a time, Crossfire was a good show
At one time, Crossfire was the exception to cable news. A well-spoken, but respectful, liberal host and a well-spoken, but respectful, conservtive host with two guests and an actual discussion. Things would get heated, people would shout, but it wasn't the same four soundbites screamed at top volume for 1/2 hour. And it wasn't a carbon copy of every other show on cable news. Now, every show is a "debate" format and it's become a race to the bottom.

Edited on Thu Jan-06-05 10:17 AM by Buns_of_Fire
...The network also plans to end "Capital Gang," the long-running Saturday night panel show created by Novak, later this year.

(same article)

...although I would have preferred that, when Klein said (I'm paraphrasing here), "I side with Jon Stewart on this...", he would have added "...Tucker is a dick."

(On edit: BTW, welcome, drew! :hi: )

20. Why doesn't Comedy Central make The Daily Show an hour long?
Throw-in an opening monologue, make the interviews longer (maybe even TWO interviews), and you've got yourself an hour program right there.

If Dennis Miller can manage to half-heartedly slog his way tediously through a whole hour, Jon Stewart should have an easy time of it.
