Fuck CNN!
During the joing press conference with Powell, Jebbie, and the Foreign Minister of Thailand, CNN only showed the end of the Thai minister's remarks, and then showed Powell's and Jebbie's remarks in full. And then they dropped the question and answer portion, just when the minister was going to answer. Would it be asking too much to hear what the officials of the affected country have to say? Where can one get any semblance of news nowadays? Aaaaaaarrrrrgggggh! :grr:

I think they have slid to the right irreparably.

They had the Thai ambassador on answering questions, but their coverage of this event has been pathetic, and I remember a time when this would not have been true.

35. CSpans mission limits their scope
They are funded under the narrow guise of educating the public about the workings of American government. As such, they stay with inside the beltway doings, and venture out only on such things as the Constitution, election primaries, American political history and the like. Its up to the others to cover international news.

Indonesia and neighbors to establish early warning system
2005/1/4
By Lely T. Djuhari BANDA ACEH, Indonesia, AP

Indonesia said Monday it plans to establish an early warning system for disasters with its neighbors, as its death toll from last week's earthquake and tsunami jumped to almost 100,000.

Indonesia, which suffered the most death and destruction in last week's disaster, will host a conference later this week of nations hit and major aid donors that is likely to focus on how best to deliver relief efforts.

Participants, including U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and senior United Nations officials, may also discuss ways to establish an multi-country warning system.

Officials say an untold number of deaths could have been prevented if such a system — which exists in the Pacific Ocean — had been in place on Dec. 26, when a massive earthquake off Indonesia's Sumatra island sent huge waves surging into coastlines of at least a dozen countries on the edge of the Indian Ocean. The death toll is expected to top 150,000 people.

52. But will they use it?
Some of the countries did receive a warning because cries of help came from Sri Lanka, but refused to do anything to upset the tourist trade. The previous time they put out a warning the merchants were upset due to the fact there was no tsunami and people left the coast for a period of time.

Only Jebbie and Colon Bowel could possibly be interesting to US; anyhow the furriner prob'ly has an accent, and we don't want to have to actually concentrate on what somebody is saying. 18. You just have to quit
The Faux phenomenon has coerced all the major news agencies, motivated by economics, to alter their programming along a more streamlined approach, e.g. least common intellectual denominator. Hence, the lack of traditional journalistic integrity. I have given up, I do not watch any network or cable news. With the Internet I can choose what distortion to view or not to view.

The dumbing down of America, the GOP agenda.

I swore off, but when something like this happens I watch, and I watch the BBC at 11:00 for the real truth.

In fact CNN at night has gotten so BBC-ish it isn't funny, they are trying to compete, scaled the set down and have a British and Asian anchor, it feels like going from a coffee klatch during the day to real news (but I'm wise to it, I'm not fooled).

I'll admit I relapse 1-2 x's a week for about 60-120 seconds each, that's about 1/2 hour a month. I'm overcome with shame and I get the shakes. It's all over about 5 minutes after I turn off the TV. It's like the survivor said in "Dawn of the Dead 1" when one of the people asked why the living dead zombies kept coming back to the shopping center, "They've always come here, they think there's something here they want."

61. MSM will never get it
As I watch and compare their coverage with coverage from the rest of the world, I wonder if they will every understand why there is this view of 'the ugly American'. It's all about what the US rather than the world is doing. I saw one general last night and you'd believe he was totally unaware that the UN and several international NGOs in devstated countries were on the ground and up and running from day one. US, US, US...ad nauseum rather than 'us'the entire world.

How come other media networks are more sensitive to the fact that the world is united in this and that there are several agencies, NGOs and governments working together to help a region in crisis.

It is not that the rest of the world does not appreciate the critical US help in terms of helicopters and so on - it is just the non-stop boasting that makes people puke.
