WHAT IF THE UN FOLDS?
NYT is reporting about a secret meeting held to try and save Annan and the UN.

Does the UN even have any real power any more? They seemed to have done nothing to help the people in Darfur.

If the top management is shown to be involved in the Oil for Food scandal they could all go down.

1. I saw that article about Kofi Annan holding a....
behind-the-scenes meeting and I wondered what it meant.
I don't think the Europeans will let the UN cave to * and company though.

2. if it does i fear that US influence is gone with it
wingnuts of course dint see it this way, because they think we should rule the world, but I would expect the EU, Japan, China and Russia to form a new global body, and the US could end up on the sidelines

8. There could never
be a "global" body without the US. It is too powerful, too rich, too big not to be included.

3. The so-called "Oil for Food scandal" has been fabricated
by neocons as retribution to Kofi Annan for his opposition to the Iraq war.

Pure and simple. The UN won't fold, despite the best efforts of our government.

13. the scandal is much broader than the UN involvement
Saddam was getting oil out even before Oil for Food.
Yes, Saddam was a cheater. People made money illegally, what is new. I want to know who was profiting, might even be some Bush supporters and donors.

15. I heard not long ago that
China was also being looked at as a source that got a bunch of illegal monies from the OFF program too, as well as NKorea. Never heard anymore about that though.

I gotta start writing down sources when I hear stuff like this..

knowing Saddam was going to cheat. The State Dept. website still brags about the program, which probably saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

4. The US has always been the power behind the UN and with the
current regime in power in DC there is little power left for the UN. The collapse of the UN is one of bush's secret agendas, it can be seen in every international action he has taken since stealing the White House the first time.

5. It seems ironic....
The US has always been the power and the driving force behind the scenes at the UN.
Remember Boutros-Ghali, the former Secretary-General? He was yanked because the US didn't like his financial management of the UN. So they orchestrated the election of a new S-G.... KOFI ANNAN!

They might appoint CLINTON Secretary General.

12. Because their ministers tell them the UN is evil
and Kofi Annan is the antichrist? I have heard that some are saying this, anyway.

The US media is incapable of reporting accurately on the UN. Ignore it.

14. First of all, calm down
Annan is not the UN. If Annan is involved in the "Oil for Food" scandal, he should not be saved. And someone should be picked to replace him.

Secondly, when did the UN EVER have any real power?
