I shudder to think how BushCo is taking advantage of the Tsunami Crisis
With the world's attention focused on southern Asia, I have no doubt that all kinds of nefarious shit is going down.

I should say, even more nefarious shit than usual.

1. there'll be stuff out in the open, too

Watch and see who gets the reconstruction contracts in Indonesia. Bet the initials KBR will be in there. After all, it's our money -- we should get to select whom we spend it on..

"conspiracy" in the OP.

The OP in no way suggested that the administration is responsible for the earthquake and tsunamis, but I share the distrust and disgust in this administration's handling of the recent crisis.

And if other events should be any indication, the administration will do whatever it can in its power to take advantage of the crisis. That's almost a given.

If you don't see a difference between Jeb Bush and Robert F. Kennedy it's no wonder you're not flying your flag upside down.

You do see a difference between George Bush and John F. Kennedy I hope.

14. Hey Tinoire
Is it just me, or have you noticed quite a few people recently trying to subtly defend Bush in the aftermath of the earthquakes and tsunamis? While this isn't exactly the rally around the president effect of 9/11, I've got the impression that some have become defensive of this notion as the US being a very generous nation. It's become especially apparent after the UN official's statement about stinginess.

For example, I've seen several posts defending the amounts the administration has spent on the basis of the national debt alone. Amazing, but these same posts say nothing about the costs of Iraq and the bloated defense budget in general.

I'm tired of seeing even subtle defending of the Bush agenda. While I may believe this administration couldn't have CAUSED the disaster, I'm amazed at posts attacking other DUers for expressing their disbelief at the way this administration will handle it.

18. I'm so glad you noticed it.
Yes I have. One thing I've noticed since I've been here is that they descend on this site in waves protesting and trying to shut people up. The minute they do, you know to start digging deeper! This time lol, they even sent an editorial to the New York Times!

Were you here for the war announcement or Saddaam's capture? It was even worse. You were here for Abu Ghraib right? Oh lord was that ever something with all the torture apologia!

If you go look at their boards, they're deeply offended that the world and people like us think this administration is stingy... And these people, the ones defending him the loudest? Go to their boards, not a single donation thread in site! So glad you noticed too ;)

By the way, I want to let you know what a pleasure it is to read your posts- even when we disagree lol. :hi:

19. I'm quite flattered
that you find any pleasure in reading my posts!

Thanks :) I enjoy your posts too. Yes, even though at times we may disagree, I believe the free exchange of ideas is too important to be determined by what "the other side thinks". I view this forum as a haven for those of us that are opposed to the direction Bush and the neo cons are taking this country...and I'm getting more tired of people defending the indefensable - and that includes the way this administration has handled the entire recent crisis in Asia (and for that matter Iraq and just about anything else as well).

I've been here for about a year and a half, so I remember the Saddam capture and Abu Ghraib quite well. I remember several posts defending the torture as being "pranks", echoing the words of Rush Limbaugh.

BTW what NYT editorial are speaking of? And what board are you speaking of (if the board is one that DU doesn't allow mentioned, you can PM it to me). Thanks.

Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 12:18 PM by Tinoire
I find the irony delicious... The pseudo-liberal paper that led the charge for the war in Iraq, deliberately lying that there were WMDs in Iraq and that Saddaam had something to do with 9-11, deriding DU for "conspiracy theories".

The NYT owes a grovelling apology to evey single Iraqi and American- dead and alive.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x1116859

And the boards? It's not even important. If you want I'll pm them to you but they're really a sorry waste of space and time.

Peace

Newmont denies mine pollution claims: Shares fall as Indonesian controversy intensifies

12/22/04 10:13:00 am   General, Land, Mercury

Newmont Mining admitted Wednesday that it released mercury into the environment on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, but denied the releases sickened nearby residents.

The Denver-based company's shares closed down 1.6 percent at $44.73 after Newmont (NEM: news, chart, profile) responded to a claim in the New York Times that top company officials received an internal memo three years ago claiming improper releases of tons of toxic mercury vapor into the air and water.

The Denver-based company repeatedly has denied allegations by Indonesian authorities that toxic waste from a mine operated by its Indonesian subsidiary, Newmont Minahasa Raya, contaminated Buyat Bay on Sulawesi and polluted the food chain, resulting in illnesses for many villagers in the area.

Mercury is used in some gold-mining processes. It can be toxic to human. Waterborne mercury settles at the bottom and typically works its way up the aquatic food chain, entering the human body through concentration in the fatty tissues of fish.

16. Exxon:... / giant 42 trillion cubic feet Natuna natural gas field

by Hsing Lee
....

In Part 2, we take a look at the Project For a New American Century, and continue our "follow the money" timeline.

(snip)

May 1998 – The corrupt Indonesian government of US puppet Suharto falls. The US no longer has the leverage needed to force the Natuna deal through.

July 1998 – The Exxon Natuna deal for Spratly gas officially goes bust, according to the US department of energy…

www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/eastasia.html

"…In July 1998, Indonesia's government announced that it would postpone exploration at the giant 42 trillion cubic feet Natuna natural gas field operated by Exxon (Mobil holds a 26 percent stake as well, with Indonesia's Pertamina holding 24 percent). The project's chairman, Faisal Abdou, said that "if prospects are good in the future, maybe the Natuna project could be restarted in 2007....''

Exxon 'helped torture in Indonesia', 06/15/01 - An international human rights group says it has filed a lawsuit against the giant ExxonMobil oil company, accusing it of actively abetting human rights abuses in Indonesia....It alleges that Exxon provided the Indonesian military with equipment to dig mass graves, as well as building interrogation and torture centres. Exxon denies all the allegations.

27. Try this on;
I rarely watch the news, but the reporting of the Tsunami disaster sent me over the top. Only the US used it as a way to further a political point of view. The US is a world leader in giving, and on and on. It made me sick.

Try this on:

What if LESS THAN one quarter of the people who voted for Kerry cancel their cable television service to protest the news media? Let’s say 250,000 households.

On average, cable costs $2/day. That’s HALF A MILLION DOLLARS PER DAY.

Keep it off a month, that’s 15 MILLION DOLLARS

If you don’t think that will have an economic impact on cable television, you’re wrong.

DO THIS ON INAUGURATION DAY

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. KILL YOUR TELEVISION SERVICE. GET TO KNOW YOUR KIDS, GET TO KNOW YOUR PARTNER, GET TO KNOW YOURSELF. READ MORE. GET MORE EXERCISE. LISTEN TO THE RADIO, PLAY MORE MUSIC, RENT A MOVIE IF YOU MUST WATCH TELEVISION.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, SEND THE MONEY YOU SAVE TO DISASTER RELIEF.

IF YOU WANT THIS COUNTRY BACK, YOU HAVE TO TAKE IT BACK.
