The reason "lying" is being played is because they want you to forget about missing the WMDs. This way they can air some dirty laundry in the summer when noone important is watching, and seed a large opposition to harvest.

Then when the WMDs suddenly come back on the radar in the form of another pre-election sequel attack on another american liberal stronghold, they'll be able to chastise anyone who ever doubted Bush, distracted efforts and diverted attention.
