Lieberman opens anti-Dean offensive
Edited on Fri Sep-05-03 01:02 AM by pruner
…Lieberman almost sounded as if he were prepared to lose the nomination in order to prevent Dean from winning it and becoming president.

Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe said after the event that the Lieberman-Dean sparring was mild compared to the way George Bush had attacked Arizona Sen. John McCain when the two men were competing for the 2000 GOP nomination. Thursday night’s debate was not, McAuliffe said, an event where the rivals “ripped each other to shreds.” He predicted the intra-party fighting “is going to get rougher as we got toward Iowa and New Hampshire,” the first two Democratic contests next year. He said he had directed the Democratic Leadership Council, a business-friendly group of Democrats who have compared Dean to losing Democratic candidates of the past, George McGovern and Walter Mondale, to not issue any more statements attacking Dean. (emphasis mine)

<snip>

The debate seemed to leave unanswered questions about the next stage of the Democratic contest: Will Lieberman establish himself as the anti-Dean? Will his strategy of pointed attacks on Dean weaken Dean and strengthen Lieberman or will it have the reverse effect? And is an opening now developing for another candidate who gains ground by remaining calmly above the Dean-Lieberman fray?

13. Look at Dean's campaign. No crash and burn here.
It's like no other campaign ever run, so it's useless to use the comparisons of Tsongas, et al. He has over 100,000 meetup people behind that are die-hards (believe me, I am one of many). There is no indicators showing his campaign is slowing down, on the contrary, he is expected to raise over 10 million (count them) 10 million dollars this quarter.

Dean's campaign has been brilliant and well-planned for a long time. He is just warming up!

2. I was at a debate party with 200 people
They all groaned at Liebermans attack on Dean. I don't think it will help him at all.

9. What's up wit the wacky threads, pardner?
Flame bait on Kucinich. A dupe thread on Lieberman/Dean. Do you have some kind of fixation on disputes between dems? Just curious.

12. Best thing that could have happened for Dean...
being able to say that repugnant lite (clever pun, huh, and yes I ahve been drikning) Joe Lieberman doesn't like me is probably one of the best campaign slogans any democratic candidate could have.

14. Hey Joe, what have you done for the country or the party?
It's a two way street. If Lieberman doesn't keep the sparring very light and mild, it could get very nasty. How about:

Sen. Lieberman (R. Conn)

26. My response at their website...
As usual, I believe that Joe Lieberman proved
that he is the best friend that George Bush has
among the nine declared candidates.

His positions are clearly more in sync with the
Republicans than the Democrats, and I was
confrmed in my belief that, if by some miracle,
he is selected as the Democratic candidate for
President in 2004, I will be voting somewhere
left of the Democrats. Interestingly enough, my
wife, who had been an "ABB" (Anyone But Bush)
voter decided, without my prompting, that she is
also now an "ABBoL" (Anyone But Bush or
Lieberman) voter.

By the way, expect to hear his quote "Dean
Depression" turning up in Republican ads. Thanks,
Joe! Good work arming our enemies.

Atlant

18. The BBC news covered Dean in New Mexico,
word seems to be out that Dean is the front runner, no
mention of Lieberman.
Given how unpopular Lieberman is, he makes Howard Dean look even better,

Edited on Fri Sep-05-03 05:32 AM by Thankfully_in_Britai
Or rather Dean's interview style. The Beeb report was all about Dean.

23. I have read that thread.
I think he looked good, the report showed his overwhelming support.
Bare in mind that he was getting read for the debate and that the report also pointed out the most Americans have not yet heard of him.
He has something and it did also draw similarities to Clinton in that he was an unknown. They did not mention any of his rivals either, which I thought was interesting too.

I am not part of the Dean/Kerry/Clark or whoever debate, I can't vote but I am interested in the race and I do think that Dean dispite his brusque appearance, came across well.
The whole world will be holding it's breath over this election, not just the Americans.
Especially when the BBC Radio 4, has been talking about the threats to Iran over Nuclear weapons!!!!

24. Al From's mouthpiece
Joe is the DLC's candidate, so it makes sense that his number one goal is to derail any candidate who does agree with that group from winning the nomination.
