We love it when we get to deliver some good news about immigration policy changes. These latest modifications are particularly welcome.

The New Zealand Immigration Service (NZIS) has modified its Skilled Migrant category requirements to make it easier for folks to qualify for residency (and not coincidently, to help NZIS shore up its flagging quotas). These changes become effective on 13 December 2004.

As we have previously discussed in our newsletter, NZIS is scrambling to recover from the sudden drop in qualified applications for residency caused by the introduction of their current, tougher Skilled Migrant requirements. It is their hope that this new kinder, gentler version will attract more qualified prospective applicants.

Here is a brief outline of the Skilled Migrant category changes at this stage:

1. Bonus points for qualifications, work experience and an offer of skilled employment related to an "area of absolute skills shortage" will increase from an existing five (5) points to a new level of ten (10) points each.

1. Planning on a career in sheephearding?
I kid. I kid.

But, wow, is New Zealand far away. If you want to get there by Christmas, I think you need to leave by December 1st.

4. NPR reported on NZ about 11-4-'04
The NZIS indicated that, on Nov 3rd, immigration calls from the US increased by 400 percent. At that time, the NZIS also said that "it has never been easier to immigrate to NZ".
