any interest in a Globalization or Free/Fair Trade Group?
Here's a proposed mission statement:

This group is for the discussion of issues related to economic globalization, such as labor rights and local political control.

Anyone? I know of quite a few folks who've been involved in the past, including some with whom I don't agree but who I'd like to see involved such a group (hi, Nederland :) ). Feel free to suggest tweaks to the mission statement.

6. oh hell, I know just enough
to be dangerous to myself and others, really. Part of my interest in starting this group would be in order to make it a clearinghouse for info.

8. Here is a good starting point:
Start with the earliest columns at the bottom.

10. thanks
I actually have read some of Greg's articles, Naomi Klein and others. I understand many of the basic principals of how the "free trade" policies of the WTO, the World Bank and IMF undermine human rights, environmental protections and increase poverty. I support debt relief for third world countries. I actually 'blockaded' the WB & IMF meetings in DC once, and spent a few years fighting Walmart.

But I guess it is the details in economic issues that intimidate me to an extent.
I've never been an 'economics' type. I do have a grasp of concepts such as fairness, human rights and environmental protection.

Hoping to learn more... :-)

12. I am not an ecomomic person either. But Russell Mokhiber's
"Corporate Predators" and Arianna Huffington's "Pigs at the Trough" were good reads, despite the number crunching bit going WOOSH right over my head. *l*

16. thanks for the heads up!
they are both excellent writers.

I have been thinking also that the BFEE/PNAC has added something new to the equation. They don't seem inclined to work well with other members of the WTO, though Bush is a big supporter of NAFTA etc.
I am wondering what the future will bring.

overseas where we don't have to care about the community around us. :eyes:

7. Yes, the impact globalization has on the environment. In light of the
reports of the Artic's unhealthy state, we have to look at earth rights as well as human rights. :)

is one of the best resources for info on globalization's environmental impact and, the Governmental Agencies that enable the Corps.

14. I will post from time to time, though I doubt I'll have any rosy comments.
What with me being against globalization in lieu of nations supporting their own and doing fair trade with one another and all...

18. not in a unified way, though.
Part of the problem we face is that we on the left are kept running from one fire to another toting water buckets. We need a comprehensive answer to the root problem.

I'm wondering if this would work better as a subset of the Economic Development forum, or whatever it's called.
