Thinking about how far this country has moved to the right is depressing
Man, it seems like a lot of states had their own equivalent of Paul Wellstone in the 60s and 70s, even Republicans like Jacob Javits. Shit, Barack Obama would have been a "moderate" compared to those guys. Barry Goldwater, a pro-choice/pro-gay founding member of the Arizona NAACP, was thought of as a "dangerous, right-wing extremist."

I miss those days I was never alive. *sigh*

1. It is a scary proposition.
Historically, there have always been back lashes of conservatism after periods of enlightenment. What drives this surge. Did 9-11 propel us into the void out of fear; xenophobia, religious intolerance, a feeling of moral superiority? I agree with you, todays conservatives are more akin to those of the inquistion. If I belived in a god, I would hope he would help us all. :evilfrown:

4. God Would Certainly Not Declare War on a 3rd Rate Country
who never was a threat to us. Falwell/Robertson wishes to turn the election into a mandate for Christian radicals (and their interests in a diamond mine in South Africa inciting unrest for the civilians).

Theyhave their priorites.

2. It's The Christian Right - The Swift Advance of a Planned Coup
The slide to the right is NOT an accident or a trend.

It is a well planned, skillfully executed power grab by the leaders of the Religious Right. Take a look at the articles below. They are extensively documented with primary sources. They lay open a frightening brutal agenda that has been in the works for 30 years and is unfolding according to plan right now.

6. And in the last days....
good will be known as evil, and evil as good. Good is not robbing from the poor and giving to the rich. Good is not sending our poor kids to die without reason in Iraq.

5. Goldwater helped found the NAACP?
That shocks me, given his opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act (I know it relates to his strict constructionism rather than to his bigotry, but it still shocks me.).

7. Speaking of Goldwater,
I think we should revive the unofficial Goldwater slogan:

"In your guts, you know he's nuts".

8. A simple correlation
If you compare the steady decline in public education, coupled with the Souths unwillingness to learn to read you will have an answer to a steady increase in Conservetivism. Religious spooks think the end is nigh. And with Bush at the helm nuclear armageddon is just one flip of a kill switch away.

10. You can relax, but only a little. Turns out it was a big RW lie
Yup, the whole thing was just another lie concocted by the Reich Wing and shoved down our throats by the media:

http://www.zogby.com/soundbites/ReadClips.dbm?ID=10389

The Zogby poll shows that when voters were asked to list the moral issue that most affected their vote, the Iraq war topped the list (42%) more than tripling the number that chose abortion (13%) or gay marriage (9%). Also, when asked to choose the most urgent moral crisis facing the U.S., voters chose greed and materialism (33%) and poverty and economic justice (31%) twice as often as abortion (16%) and gay marriage (12%).

12. I had a winter vacation planned in a red state, too
Cancelled.

Staying home; will spend my money in NYC.

Oh and btw, I told the red state residents that if they want to see me, they can come here and spend their money in a blue state.

18. Exactly! The RW would love for us ALL to move further to the right
and that's what their post-election meme/talking point is trying to convince us to do.

Ever wonder why the media seemed to be of one voice on November 3 abou how the GOP won because of "Moral Values"? And so many dems/progressives adopted the same talking points?

That was the ONLY reason they could offer up as to why GWP could have won.

I wonder how many months ago the Rove Administration came up with this brilliant idea?

THE "MORAL VALUES" MEME SERVES TWO PURPOSES FOR THEM:

1. To provide a rationale for election results that are otherwise not logical (i.e., the exit polls said one thing, vote tallies said another). In other words, it's a ploy to distract and demoralize anyone who would question why they "won" the election "fair & square".

2. To ensure that Democrats/Progressives will abandon their own principles and move rightward!

15. healthcare
I heard of a study that said 67% of people polled in the U.S. support some sort of single-payer/universal healthcare. That doesn't sound like a rt-wing tide to me.

17. I think I see it not the same/ It just goes up and down
We seem to ride to one side until it goes to far then it moves back to the center and then off to the other side. It looks like the world is becoming more Dem. many more countries than when I was born. ('30's) Some of the countries that were under control of other countries are really bad off and some are getting better. Look at Indo-China or what was that part of the world. We seem to be where we were in the 20's or 1880.Rich ran the show and things finally just stopped and went the other way.We do not seem to be going with the rest of the world or maybe we are just behind it.I almost fell over when I read this "Purged people in CIA by WH" or words to that meaning. To use purge is shades of Russia. Something is really going fast and heading for trouble. Air lines must give their list and all information to govt. Even religion of these flyer's? Come on, this is all very odd and it is going fast now with this last election. We may be going to far to the right.I am willing to bet the next 4 years will be hell for the Left and even the Right will not like it.
