Rumsfeld, Army Leaders in Discord
http://www.truthout.org/docs_03/090203B.shtml

By Robert Schlesinger
     Boston Globe
     Monday 01 September 2003

WASHINGTON -- In nearly three years with President Bush as commander in chief, the US Army has led the toppling of the Taliban in Afghanistan and the repressive regime in Iraq. But in the halls of the Pentagon, its leaders are losing bitter battles to Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld that have broad implications for national security and the future of the nation's half-million soldiers.

Rumsfeld and the Army leadership have clashed on issues ranging from the number of troops in Iraq to the size of the overall force needed to defend America.

Rumsfeld's critics say the skirmishing is taking a toll on the Army, with casualties that include the loss of a prized weapons system last year, the resignation of Army Secretary Thomas White last spring, and, in recent weeks, the retirement of four top generals, with more expected in the coming months.

"You look at Rumsfeld, and beyond all the rationale, spoken and unspoken, he just dislikes the Army. It's just palpable. . . . You always have to wonder if when Rumsfeld was a Navy lieutenant junior grade whether an Army officer stole his girlfriend," said Ralph Peters, a former Army intelligence officer who writes on national security issues.

4. The Generals don't like a Dictatorship!
It goes against all their training like it did in the German Army!

7. Soon Rummy will be that "Army of One" they keep bragging about!
Maybe that slogan was meant to be a subtle dig on the idiots in charge?

It reminds me of something a dictator would make up.

And Symbolman's use of it in his flash with the reminder that a soldier faces death as an "Army of One" suggests to me that someone in the Pentagon is a subversive or they are largely ignorant concerning the ambiguity of meaning to be found in such a slogan.

Hearing that there is dissension in the halls of the Pentagon makes me wonder even more about the choice of slogan. E Pluribus Chaos.

8. Scary...
all the Army brass that was forced/is being forced into retirement:

We have a Marine as NATO SACEUR, an Air Force general in charge before him. Rumsfeld had to put a retiree back in uniform as Army Chief because no one wanted the job. Rummy's got it in for the Army, no doubt about it.

9. Militarism has led to disaster throughout history
Edited on Tue Sep-02-03 01:34 PM by bobthedrummer
The role is to protect, preserve and defend our assaulted US Constitution-not build colonies for corporations or follow hidden agenda of the neo-conservative nutz around Reichmarshall Rumsfeld.

That agendga is becoming more visible everyday.
Think tanks prepared for it with the following, which includes studies on coups. Some of the Generals are American Constitutionalists, in fact-the majority are for US not neocon treason.

13. More links re: militarism
We have militarized space
only Dennis Kucinich had enough guts to address this but the language of the original Space Preservation Act of 2001/HR2977 concerning specific "exotic weapons" was disappeared from the revised Space Preservation Act of 2002/HR3616
