11. My Thoughts Go A Little Farther - Firing Squad In The Morning
So he can see the precious day he will no longer enjoy.

I do abhor gore but would gladly attend his execution after trial by the Senate or the people.

Watching the bullets chew his flesh would bring some closure to his pitiful reign and the destruction he has wreaked upon the world.

8. hallalujah. my marriage is *safe*.
i don't get it any more, i really don't. the america that i was brought up to love and respect and fight and die for (by two conservative parents in the deep south, btw) has been hijacked and only exists in the past i guess. and in canada and europe. because those are not my morals and they are certainly not my parent's morals.and how the hell did what consenting adults do get to the point where it trumps ^that^?

dammit.

5. My son is eleven months old
And I don't blame the 'insurgents'in Iraq one goddamned bit for this. If a foreign country invaded us and killed or maimed my son, I would make it my life's work to kill as many of them as humanly possible through whatever means necessary and possible. Who wouldn't?

We fucking invaded THEM. There were no WMDs, and those supporting the war are the same ones who throw pictures of aborted fetuses up on the net to turn your stomach and say how evil abortion is.

WHAT ABOUT THIS, YOU ASSHOLES?!

Right.... only Christian kids matter... my bad.

9. 59 million Americans guilty of War Crimes
Edited on Sat Nov-06-04 11:10 PM by nine30
I don't know what else to say.

People living in the middle of fucking Red-State-Shitholes worried about "Terror", thinking Bush will keep them 'safe'?

And who is keeping THEM, the people above, safe from US ?

My anger these days is increasingly turning to the people who elected him. Everybody knows that Bush is responsible for mass murder. He is who he is. But despite that they gave him their vote. And why ? Just because some guys would be butt fucking with legal consent ??

12. Baghdad & Tenochtitlán, Historical Parallels
On the day we invaded Iraq I ended a friendship over this issue. This is the text of the last letter I sent her. Somehow, knowing that I was right, has not cleared the taste of ashes and gall from my mouth. I am so ashamed of what we have done. And heartbroken that nearly half my countrymen still cannot see the horror:

March 23, 2003

I deeply regret to hear that you agree with this bellicose position. How many atrocities will we tolerate now and point to 9/11 as an excuse? We've already leveled Afghanistan. Now we're leveling Iraq, which even our own intelligence sources say has no links to Al Qaeda. We've launched a preemptive war against Iraq losing all claim of moral superiority over Imperial Japan for attacking Pearl Harbor.

The saddest thing about all this is watching this country tear the constitution and the bill of rights to shreds in the name of freedom liberty and democracy. We are slowly turning into a National Socialist state and we are so blinded by hatred we can't see it. By this measure, the terrorists won.

Almost five centuries ago the forces of Hernán Cortés laid siege and destroyed the Aztec city of Tenochtitlán. Cortés was motivated by a thirst for gold but he also genuinely believed in the moral superiority of his religious faith. To end the siege, the Aztecs had to surrender more than just their weapons, they had to also surrender their faith. So the siege continued until the defenders were too weak to cast stones and the conquerors walked over the emaciated bodies of the defenders. The memory of that disaster is seared into the Mexican consciousness to this very day; It poisoned relations between Mexico and Spain for 100 years after Mexican independence.

The Fall of Tenochtitlán:

Broken spears lie in the roads;
We have torn our hair in our grief
The houses are roofless now, and their walls
Are red with blood.

Worms are swarming in the streets and plazas,
And the walks are spattered with gore
The water has turned red, as if it were dyed
And when we drink it,
It has the taste of brine

We have pounded our hands in despair
Against the adobe walls,
For our inheritance, our city, is lost and dead
The shields of our warriors were its defense.
But they could not save it.

We have chewed dry twigs and salt grasses:
We have filled our mouths with dust and bits of adobe.
We have eaten lizards, rats and worms
When we had meat, we ate it almost raw.

- Cantares Mexicanos
The National Library of Mexico,
circa 1523

We have invaded Iraq and visited death and destruction upon its people. We too are motivated by a thirst for black gold, and we also genuinely believe in the moral superiority of our religion. Not since the conquest of Mexico has there been such a lopsided mismatch of weapons. The "war" with Iraq and the siege of Baghdad may not last three weeks but its aftermath will reverberate for countless generations. May the satisfaction of our victory outlast the collective memory of those who are about to receive our Democratic "blessing"

17. to be fair, the Aztecs were seriously hated by all around them
and the only way Cortez even made it to Mexico City was because he got the locals to be his allies in their hatred against the Aztecs.

He also was able to starve the city before he went in and started burning everyone at the stake. Luck of geography in his case.

The Aztecs weren't a bunch of saints. Nevertheless, Cortez was worse, especially once the city fell.

I'm really just nitpicking.

19. Iraq was hated also...
Cortez was first welcomed, then expelled losing nearly half of his army. Then came back and laid siege to the city, Just as we are now doing in Fallujah.

The Aztec empire was composed of three allied city states, Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tacuba. In many ways similar to the Suni, Shia, and Kurd alliance that composed Iraq.

No, the Aztecs weren't saints and neither were the Iraqis. But replacing the Aztec empire with the Spanish empire was a move from bad to worse, just like the move to replace The Baathists with an occupying army was a move from bad to worse. Like every occupied nation before them, the natives eventually realized their mistake in allowing an outside occupying power to become their master.

Cortez's allies suffered and were eventually destroyed along with the Aztecs they hated so much.

“He was thinking about invading Iraq in 1999,” said author and journalist Mickey Herskowitz. “It was on his mind. He said to me: ‘One of the keys to being seen as a great leader is to be seen as a commander-in-chief.’ And he said, ‘My father had all this political capital built up when he drove the Iraqis out of Kuwait and he wasted it.’ He said, ‘If I have a chance to invade….if I had that much capital, I’m not going to waste it. I’m going to get everything passed that I want to get passed and I’m going to have a successful presidency.”
