CNN: Reid to be new Senate minority leader
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 01:10 PM by nickinSTL
(apologies if this is a dupe)

CNN is reporting the Reid is unopposed to be the new minority leader. Isn't it a bit early to say that?

From what I see on Reid in the article (link below) Reid is NOT what we need. We need someone with passion, and I also don't like the idea of a conservative Dem in the leadership.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/11/04/reid.senate.ap/index.html

edited for disclaimer: I know nothing about Reid, really, so my criticism is entirely based my impressions from the CNN article.

7. Senior Senator from Nevada.
He's the one who can vote like an ultra-liberal and never lose his 'Red' state Senate seat.

His big fight is keeping nuclear waste out of Yucca Mountain and the good people of Nevada just love him for it.

He's not as blatantly partisan as Daschle, but he's strong and powerful.

13. He's never been targeted like Daschle was targeted
I bet he gets smeared bad when he is up for re-election. I bet his Red State constituents suddenly find him being morphed into Goldstein, uh, Osama.

33. Umm he's LESS of a Democrat than Daschle (?)
I don't think that's a step in the right direction, actually.

18. He's not on the judiciary committee.
He can be as anti-choice as he wants. It won't matter. Plus, Arlen Specter is going to chair the judiciary committee, he's about as pro-choice as a Republican can get.

And after Roe v. Wade is overturned and the Senate is considering new limitations on women's choice where will Senator Reid be ?

30. Unless the Pubs can somehow reform the filibuster rule
Roe v. Wade is safe. Dems can filibuster for the rest of the decade if they have to, they're not going to allow an anti-choice SC justice.

14. I suppose you would support Ted Kennedy?
Who else could do the job?

Senate minority leaders can appoint Committee members. The Majority leader can't. Committee appointments are a big deal.

22. Exactly Dodd, Durbin, Levin, Biden
Shouldn't the minority leader be a capable speaker; have some tv personality?

Why not Hillary? Hell, why not Lieberman?

Really a lousy choice.

Not to mention, junior Senators cannot be congressional leaders.

Nevada senator co-sponsors national women's health bill

Saturday, April 24, 2004

Sen. Harry Reid and five other senators have proposed legislation to increase federal spending on women's health, family planning and contraception programs.

The bill, which was introduced last week, would also require health insurance companies to expand coverage for birth control and direct hospitals to provide emergency contraceptives to rape victims who request them.

Reid, D-Nev., said wider availability of sex education, preventive health care and birth control would reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.

Reid described the bill as an opportunity "to find common ground" among people who are anti-abortion and those who favor abortion rights.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2004/04/24/state1455EDT0059.DTL&type=health

The co-sponsors are impressive: Sens. Lincoln Chafee, R-R.I., Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., Patty Murray, D-Wash., Jon Corzine, D-N.J., and Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J.

________
After Tom Daschle was defeated, I heard a media whore say that Sen. Reid might likely become the next Democratic minority senate leader. She thought it amusing since Reid was (in her words) "antiabortion." F*ck you, media whore, whoever the Hell you are!!!

20. Those guys just don't get it. They don't.
I went along on the Kerry nomination, and listened to the bullshit about running to the center. And they were wrong again.

The Democratic leadership is either completely out of touch or they're more interested in maintaining the status quo than making progress.

21. No one else wants the job
Frankly, I think the Federal Government is becoming more irrelevant by the day. So who really cares who the minority leader is?

We did reasonably well in the State Legislatures. Let's start there and in the streets and leave the Old Tory Wankers to fend for themselves.

23. You have a good point.
A majority cannot be built from the top down.

The rest of you should really think about this.

...support idea of a leader from a blue state with a safer seat who can be more of an opposition leader. Levin's staffer tried to defend Reid to me. Damn, I have nothing against Reid--I just want a fighter.

29. I'm serious.
If they want to stick to these losing tactics of trying to be "republicans lite" then we need to grow a new party. Most of them would jump right onboard anyway, once we got momentum. I believe that for the first time in recent years there is a feasible opportunity to do this.
