Liberal Media - Can we discuss a real strategy to help grow it?!
trying to keep my mind positive...its hard i know.

IMHO this is probably one of the most important things we can and have the power to help achieve...i feel we need to start thinking grassroots about everything, over @ the DNC especially...corporate cash and the internet, electronic media/access failed us...plain and simple we have been preaching to the converted, they surely helped us raise funds make no mistake but there was a HUGE disconnect between the cash raised and the kind of people we reached...the later part of the strategy failed...getting our word out to the masses.

counting on 18-25 year olds to turn out in massive numbers by rocking the vote, vote or die or even rock concerts...seems so naive to me now...seems like the youngins thought a shout out to kerry was the same as voting...they would walk through a forest fire to see REM or the dixie chicks, but would not walk 5 blocks to actually vote...i'm not trying to knit-pick or assign blame, this was an error in strategy @ the highest levels in the DNC. i don't think we can cool the kids into voting...they need passion, passion, passion and a reason to vote...sadly this didn't happen in near the numbers we needed...it just didn't

we all know this...the RW media clobbers us daily, from the internet gutter to your TV, the RW media has a stranglehold on the truth. they turned a war hero into a traitor and a draft dodger into a war hero...big brother is alive and well.

john kerry didn't help himself either and im not here as an apologist for him...but our message never got out and into the rural heartland...theirs did and stuck. and it really hurt us...this is a problem that will not go away...ive heard some suggest that we try legal means to take down RW media personalities...might or might not work? ut be assured there will be just another robot behind them ready to take orders.

i believe what we need and it is so obvious is balance...we ain't ever going to get equal time back, so forget that for now...we all need to support with our dollars and ears and mouths the liberal media that is in its infancy...Air America Radio is our best hope for counterbalancing the RW airwaves, they are already there for one thing and they are a class act and have enough street cred right now to build something very strong on....i'm going to contact them and see how we can legally help them...fund drive, donations, letters to key media people, FCC etc etc?

FST and democracy now! are in a similar position if not as evolved on a media savy level...

i think we can all agree that we have an earnest and open ear in the name of kieth olbermann and the countdown...we very much need to nurture this relationship with whatever means we can muster...i'm not sure what those are, but maybe some of you more media savy people do...please speak up so we can start a discussion on this.

REPEAT: IF WE CANNOT GET OUR MESSAGE OUT BEYOND THE HARDCORE FAITHFUL WE ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT THIS NIGHTMARE ALL OVER AGAIN.

please...if anyone has ideas most def post them, thanks much.

1. You're right --
too much preaching to the choir. We need to find a way to connect with the people who support progressive ideas (there are a lot of them), but vote Repug because they think the Republicans agree with those things (look at the survey that was done that said a lot of his supporter thought he supported the Kyoto treaty and the international court!). We need to reach those people. We need to get Air America into the mainstream -- all across the country. Limbaugh, for all his stature, does not have THAT MANY LISTENERS. We need to have think tanks that come up with the best way to phrase our arguments, so that everyone can understand what we're saying.

But, I think you're right on -- we need to start by figuring out how to get our message out, to everyone - -not just those who agree with us.

7. Read George Lakoff's "Don't Think of an Elephant"...
Getting liberal media's only half the battle. The other half is re-framing the debate, crafting our message so people can relate to it.

2. Al Gore said his new TV network would be nonpartisan...
Though just his name may keep some from watching. Whatever happened with it, anyway?

3. Unbundle cable channels
Right now most of us get a choice of standard, premium and pay PACKAGES. There has been talk for many years of making cable providers unbundle channels. In other words each consumer would make up their own dial -- eg. 25 channels for $29.95/month.

This would add a lot of diversity and niches to the TV dial. More international news channels would be made available and a more international perspective in general could emerge. Unbundling would let channels emerge that speak specifically to certain audiences rather than pretending to be "america's news source" or whatever.

Satellite radio is kind of a model for this.

5. Air America
UNfortunately, 1 in 5 (maybe more?) get their friggin political opinions from talk radio. (I guess thinking for yourself is too hard!) So, I say, fuckin SUPPORT AIR AMERICA ***AND*** IT'S ADVERTIZERS TO THE 9! Despite a rocky start, they came FROM NOTHING. They have 6.5 MILLION Internet listners (peak hours, mind you...I doubt it's that much at 3 AM for the Randi tape!), on BOTH XM and Sirius, and have almost 40 full or partial affiliates in NYC, San Fran, Philly, Miami, Boston, Atlanta, Phoenix, San Deigo (where they are THE #1 station!), Seattle, Portland, Minneapolis, Sacramento, Denver, Providence, Reno, Rochester NY, even an FM in Madison WI! So let's start with them, and if Gore gets GoreTV off the ground, GREAT, but that's even harder to launch a TV station than a radio network. Not that it can't be done...

8. What we need to do is stop thinking ALL OR NOTHING.
Getting the votes counted is vital - but everything else IS NOT a waste of time. See post #7 above.
