As disappointed as I am, let's look at history
The last incumbent who was in an election before (not taking over from being VP like Truman and Ford) to win a close reelection was Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Many argue his victory in 1912 was a fluke due only to the independent candidacy of Teddy Roosevelt. He did a lot of things in his second term, some good, some bad, but by 1920, the public was very upset and disillusioned with his policies. The 1920 election was basically considered a referendum on whether to continue in Wilson's direction which was promoted by the Democratic candidate James Cox, or back to an isolationist laissez-faire government promoted by Warren Harding.

Harding won in a landslide.

He may have been an ultra-corrupt bastard, but this holds well for the future. The pendulum theory means that by 2008 people will probably be pretty damn sick of the Bushit.

It ain't over folks. We got a tough 4 year fight, and one day, we will have our country back.

1. Diebold will be in full control in 4 years
Even if we start now, the power lies in their hands. They'll have the media, and they'll have the vote counters.

5. Hey, we still have Star Wars III to look forward to.
There's still hope.

Oh wait, that's the one where Darth Vader and the Empire take over.

My bad.

4. The vote machines won't be the same.
And neither will the media. They'll be a whole lot worse. Understand, the gloves are off now. There's no one to stop these people. We can scream fraud all we want, nothing will change. Everyone in a position of power belongs to them. I'm seriously f***ing pissed right now.

6. keep up the fight(s)
Agreed- pendulums do swing.

In the meantime, after the pain and confusion at this result passes, we have to not give in. Believe it or not, there are 'moderate' republicans, who even though they voted for *, are frightened by the extreme wing of their own party.

Even if we lost this election, it is imperative that we *not* go away quietly- the numbers are still close, and on many issues the middle agrees with us, despite voting for re-election.

Fight the rape of the environment.
Fight the erosion of civil liberties.
Fight the idea that our weapons are the only way to spread democracy.
Fight the challenges to reproductive rights.
Fight the abuse of the scientific advisory process.

Do not be quiet! Write your newspapers, write your congress members, and march in the streets, when necessary.
