It's becoming increasingly embarrassing, and I really don't see any shift to common-sense coming anytime soon...short of "first contact" with an intelligent extra-terrestrial race, I don't know what will actually change minds.

1. Ship all the religious zealots to the Moon.

They can start the first colonies. That's how Europe got rid of its religious fanatics (only it was America, not the Moon), and it worked pretty well.

12. there is a cure for christianity...
it's call "the internet".
do a little googling, and you'll find that it started out as one of many messianic apocolyptic jewish cults- that was just in the right place at the right time.

8. Hey, if you can't beat them, join them.
IF Chimpy wins, tomorrow I'm going down to the local fundie church and pledging my life to Jesus. Then I'm going to start a ministry and take the rubes for every last dollar they've got. Nothing but wine, women, and country estates in my future. All on their dollar. To hell with having a conscience.

10. I've had similar thoughts
I was looking for a Dennis Lehayne (Mystic River) book at the library today, and happened to see some of those left behind books (author has a similar last name).

I flip through it and read a few pages, and I'm thinking, I can write this. I can actually DO this. I can make some MONEY this way.

And then I thought: that's what THEY are doing. They don't believe that shit. They're in it for the money, nothing more.

major dust up in France in the 18th century. We're screwed for a while. Maybe the midterms will make a difference. Maybe Senators Bunning & Coburn spewing their hate will do it. Or maybe were totally screwed for a while. Who knows?

15. Two nations. I don't see how these 50 states can hold together
Note, I am not advocating anarchy or other treasonous activities. I merely see the rift as getting to be unhealable.

16. I think Republicans hold the key
Notwithstanding the general contempt here on DU for all things republican, the reality is that some republicans mean well. They're not evil or fundamentalist Christians or rightwing neocons. Unfortunately, these relatively moderate republicans haven't had the spine to take on shrub and the rightwing fundies, in part because they believe they owe their allegiance to these madmen to hold onto their offices.

All of which means that my proposal would probably go nowhere. But the way I see it, these mainstream republicans should basically force the rightwing fundies out of the party and force them to form their own party, calling it what it is -- rightwing, christian, fundamentalist, pentacostal, etc. Let's see how many republicans would want to be part of a party that is called what it really is. Then we become a three party country, which changes the face of politics and leadership.

If this makes any sense, it could be a new role for DU, the blogs, etc. regardless of who wins the election.

17. Locking.
Many productive and valuable members of these boards are devout practitioners of various religions. This topic is inflammatory at the best of times.

We're all stocked up on flame wars just now.

No one was likely going to find the final resolution to these issues this evening anyway. May I suggest you save it for another time?
