Favorite president of the past 40 years
That is, including all the major western democracies, i.e. UK, France, Germany, Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands.

For me, it'd easily be General De Gaulle. I especially like the way he handled the Algeria conflict. John Kerry should take note. He wasn't even considered a leftist, but he's still slightly to the left of Paul Wellstone.

JFK saved the world from anniliation, but he was only around for 3 years. WJC overall was a brilliant president.

12. Carter or Johnson
Carter for reminding us that human beings deserve respect and dignity, that the less fortunate among us deserve our help, and that it's better to *be* good than to merely be seen as a winner.

Johnson for all he did to at least try to end poverty and its destructive effects in this country, the Civil/Voting Rights Acts, and Medicare and Medicaid.

Neither was/is perfect by any means. But they are my favorites of that time period.

14. Lyndon Johnson -- no one is even close
Edited on Wed Oct-27-04 01:52 PM by HamdenRice
because he changed the US more than any president since FDR. Before LBJ, the south was terrorist country. It was horrible -- couldn't vote, go to decent schools or complain about it. Kennedy talked a good game, but was scared shitless to do anything.

Johnson ended state sponsored terrorism in a big chunk of the country.

Sorry though about that war thing...
