Poland to cut Iraq troops in early '05

Warsaw, Poland, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Poland will cut its troops in Iraq early next year and won't stay in the country "an hour longer" than needed, the country's prime minister said Friday.

"I can assure you that we will not remain in Iraq an hour longer than the common sense dictates, than it is needed to achieve our mission's goal, to give back Iraq to the Iraqis, give security to the world," Prime Minister Marek Belka told parliament. His comments were reported by the official PAP news agency.

He added that the country would reduce its troops in Iraq at the beginning of 2005 when Iraqi elections are scheduled.

Poland has 2,500 troops in south-central Iraq and is a key U.S. ally in the country.
