Local letter: Don't be ashamed to take off Bush bumper stickers....
Edited on Thu Oct-14-04 01:32 PM by madfloridian
3 good letters here.

http://www.theledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041014/NEWS/410140379/1037/EDIT

SNIPs from each:

"If you have a Bush bumper sticker on your vehicle or one of his signs in your yard, do not fear that you will lose face in the eyes of others if you remove them. Most people will admire you for your courage and commitment to decency; we were misled.

Just because you voted for him before does not mean you must vote for him again. Given his track record, it would be insanity not to change...."

Another:
"And as far as the statement, "80 percent of the world's Islamic population favors John Kerry," I found far more pieces about Islamic countries worried about their own safety while Bush and company try and run the world. So I guess it is fair to say that the majority if the Islamic faith do want George out.

And when are people going to stop wrapping themselves in the flag and saying if you aren't for Bush then you are unpatriotic and against us. This country was based on freedom of thought and as most can see that is a threat to the few that are trying to rule the world..."

And a 3rd snip, and very powerful considering the source. Here is a brief bio of this lady. ( I just edited the part I had about their being Republicans....I found an article which indicated he had been, and he might have changed.)

http://www.harrisonarts.com/content/interior.asp?section=history&body=lois.htm

SNIP from her bio:
"Lois Cowles Harrison, of Lakeland, has garnered a state-wide reputation as an arts advocate due to her many years of notable contributions to the arts. Her outstanding presence in the arts community is attributed to her selfless service while serving as a member of the Florida Arts Council from 1972-1980. She led the drive for Legislative and School Board funding for construction of the Polk Museum of Art and the Harrison School buildings. Additional credits include president of the League of Women Voters of Florida, president and member of the Board of Governors of the Polk Museum of Art, president of Planned Parenthood of Central Florida, and the Board of Directors of the Florida Endowment of the Humanities.

Mrs. Harrison is married to Homer Hooks. Mr. Hooks, a former president of the Florida Phosphate Council and former Executive Director of the Florida Department of Citrus, is past president of the Polk Museum of Art and former chairman of the Florida Arts Council...."

"Before I defend inconsistency, (bear with me on this), let's look at Bush's record, which is far from anchored in stone: He opposed creation of the independent 9/11 Commission, then changed his mind and supported it. He opposed creation of the Department of Homeland Security, then changed his mind and supported it. He opposed going to the United Nations with his case against Iraq, then changed his mind and went, with Colin Powell riding shotgun...."

Not a good day for GWB in the Lakeland Ledger.

1. Do we detect
a pattern of 'flip-flops'?? <gasp>

More like pulling fingernails out with pliers, is my guess.

Does the word "loser" ring any bells?

Her hubby is though....maybe she is not. ON Edit:
I think maybe they are not anymore. I just did some topic searches on him, and I think this may not be true anymore....which is good.

"President Bush is caught between Iraq and a hard place -- the cool judgment of the American people.

HOMER HOOKS"

Ok, I am surprised as anyone. But pleased.

7. No, that means she's old-school Repub
Remember, Republicanism used to be about individual liberty and rights. Once upon a time Repubs were solidly pro-choice.

9. I am thinking you may be right.
I know these folks sort of, and they were Bush supporters. Her bio does not make that likely, though. I think they are the older type, I think you are right. There is a huge difference.

I just thought this was a bad day for Bush in that section.

11. Most Republicans are still solidly pro-choice
They just pretend they are not to get the fundies to vote with them. The Republicans are totally hypocritical about abortion.

10. My Dad In NH told me about Republican neighbors around him that
now have Kerry signs up in their yards.

He also said that many bush signs have been spraypainted with the words LIAR across them.
