Harvard Student Sentenced for Manslaughter

A Harvard University graduate student was convicted of manslaughter Thursday and sentenced to six to eight years in prison for stabbing a teenage father to death during a street fight.

The jury in Middlesex Superior Court deliberated for more than 20 hours over five days before finding Alexander Pring-Wilson guilty of the lesser charge. Prosecutors had sought a first-degree murder conviction, portraying Pring-Wilson as the aggressor and saying he flew off the handle when the victim, Michael Colono, ridiculed him for being drunk.

Pring-Wilson's lawyers countered that he was enduring a brutal beating at the hands of Colono and Colono's cousin when he lashed out with his knife in self defense, inflicting the deadly wounds.

There was no visible reaction from Pring-Wilson as the jury forewoman read the verdict. His girlfriend and mother sobbed as he was led from the courtroom. In the hallway outside, Colono's mother, Ada, broke down in tears and was comforted by her family.
