During the fall of 2000 I lived part-time in the east Texas town of Tyler, TX.

Weekly, I made trips to the local post office to mail my bills, etc.

Each time I visited the post office none other than Rush Limbaugh was piped into the muzak speakers.

So every day the citizens of that town where being fed right-wing propaganda.

As Bush says, "you can run but you cannot hide."

Regrettably, the left is not nearly well organized enough to maintain significant momentum after the elections. This is where the Republicans beat us every time. We see politics as episodic. They see politics as continuous to be done 24/7.

People like myself would gladly work our hearts out to maintain Democratic momentum between each election. However, we can't all work for free.

Until we get serious about organizing and raising operating funds between elections, we will forever be at a disadvantage.

The problem is the whole planet does not share America's vision - other countries actually have their own visions on how they would like to progress and govern themselves. Think about this..

Demographic changes are occurring in this country such that the Electoral College will soon be a virtual lock for the Democratic Party by around 2012 (2016 at the latest). We'll have Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada locked-up as tightly as we have New York, Illinois, and California.

The GOP knows this, knows that their efforts to make inroads with key demographics aren't working, and knows that 2004 is perhaps their best shot at holding the Presidency for a long, long time. With the spectre of potential retirement hovering over so many of our Supreme Court justices, the Religious Right knows that this is their last stand in the culture wars. Should they lose this year, they know that we could be looking at 20 more years of a Clinton-Kerry court.

With no electoral remedy for them in sight, what are they to do?
Seek to amend the Constitution? Not likely.
Use state referenda to forward their agenda? Maybe, but the liberal high court will knock 'em down as it always would.
Re-focus on Congress? Perhaps this is their best option. Especially the House. But eventually it will fall as well.
Violence? Perhaps, but it won't accomplish anything.

So that's my speculation into the future. Governing intelligently and honorably is Kerry's greatest protection, which is why I have strong faith in him.

You put your finger on the real problem. The nation no longer belongs to the people. In the Corporate States of America today orders come from the corporate boardroom directly to the law makers. It's the influence of money and the constant grovelling for campaign contributions that has moved us to this place.

There are a few things that I consider necessary before we can return our nation to a democracy (or a representative republic if you will). First is the realization of the people that money is the problem and a demand from the masses that public funding of all elections be the norm for all states and national elections.

Second, require that all media conglomerates be limited to one station per media market. No more markets which one or two corporations dominate. The national political discussion must no longer be dominated by one side or the other.

The result of these actions would be that politicians will no longer be the pawns of the money elite, and the people will get the truth.

If these things are not done, then I can prophesize chaos. If * wins, and it IS possible, we will be subject to four more of the same and worse. The rich will get richer, the poor will get poorer, and the pressure will build. One day there will come the spark that broke the camel's back (hows that for a mixed metaphor?) and the reballion will begin. One thing they do forget. This is an armed country. With so many arms in the hands of the great unwashed I think we will face a time of chaos. In order that democracy be returned to us it will be necessary for the left to have set in motion a plan that most can ascribe to, including fair and proportional elections, repealing the concept of "Corporate Personhood", a full investigation of just who was involved in the whole plan to take over america with public punishment of all involved. May others also, but these are the basics.

The problem of course is "Planning Ahead", something the left has shown no ability for.

I think it may just take a charismatic leader to emerge before the people will have a nexus to rally around. I just don't see anyone emerging from the public discussion who could generate the kind of loyalty that it will take.

I think that it will be like Clinton again, but orders of magnitude worse. Their anger will probably be like our anger at Bush. If Kerry isn't as successful as Clinton was then the right may be able to unseat him in four years and replace him with a candidate even worse than Bush. The cycle will then repeat, at a greater intensity than before. Somehow we've got to find a way out of this, and (this is the hard part) it is going to have to be bipartisan.
