Cheney's Record as President of the Senate
I don't know if this has already been posted, but here it is anyway.
This came to me from Mark Crispin Miller. Thanks MCM!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"In last night's debate, Dick Cheney tried to make a point of Edward's attendance record in the US Senate.  Cheney says that he presides (as the VP is suppose to do) most Tuesdays.  Well here is the TRUTH (which Cheney wouldn't recognize of course).  Please pass this along to those who doubt.  Of course the horrible lies he told were about Iraq and healthcare, etc.  But this is tres amusement!!

That's right - he was there TWICE in FOUR YEARS!  This is why Cheney doesn't remember meeting Edwards - this guy will say anything!  Edwards also has filled the role twice in the last 4 years, but he isn't the Vice President!"

But, no Kerry?

How does a senator get picked to do this?

3. Is There A Way To Get Caucus Info???
Chenney didn't say he presided in the Senate, just as much as you'll probably find Hastert presiding over the House just as many times.

The every Tuesday thing is when both parties have their Senate Caucuses or "organizational meeting". Protocol was that the Vice President would stop by to "check in" or participate. Sen. Leahy pointed out that Chenney is the first VP in recent memory who didn't stop in on the other party's caucus (even just to say hello and leave...I can't imagine Gore got too nice a welcome from the GOOPs) and I've heard he ran roughshod over the Repugnians (if I'm not mistaken this is what caused Jeffers to bolt).

Is there a way we can find out if he attended those caucuses...let's see how much he REALLY showed up at his job.

Cheers.

8. Here is what Cheney said
this is from the transcript. I suppose it could be interpreted a few different ways...

"Now, in my capacity as vice president, I am the president of Senate, the presiding officer. I'm up in the Senate most Tuesdays when they're in session."

He does say he's the presiding officer and that he's there most Tuesdays... I take your point that he's playing a game of semantics, but what he said certainly was meant to be construed that he presides over the Senate most Tuesday's. He has left himself some wiggle room with the point you make.

9. I Took It As Caucus When I Heard It
Being a C-SPAN junkie, I can only think of one time I've seen Crashcart actually in the Senate chamber...and that was that January 7th, 2003 session when the new Senators were sworn in (the Edwards/Chenney/Dole pics).

This isn't new...Gore only showed maybe a handful of times during the Clinton years. One was to break the tie on the tax "hike" in '93 and then to certify his own election robbery in 2001.

Instead the VP, who has an office in the capitol...or at least I remember hearing Chenney did...meets with the caucuses on Tuesday.

I'm just curious if he really did attend those caucuses. Let's see how his record hold up to this...and yes, I've emailed others on this question.

10. I'm trying to find out as well
thanks for making this distinction. The more accurate we are the harder we can pin them to the wall. It's all good IMO.

17. How dishonest.... Edwards was there when he was!
Edwards had virtually a 100% attendance record until he began to run in 2003. According to the information in the opening post, the only years in which Cheney presided were years in which Edwards had excellent attendance records.
