ARMY ANNOUNCES TEMPORARY RESTATIONING OF 2-2 ID
Could someone more familiar with what these things mean interpret this for me?

ARMY ANNOUNCES TEMPORARY RESTATIONING OF 2-2 ID
September 23, 2004

The Department of the Army announced today the temporary relocation of the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, or 2-2 ID, from Korea to Fort Carson, Colo., following its current deployment to Iraq. This action will result in an increase of approximately 3,700 military authorizations at Fort Carson. The Army projects this temporary relocation for late summer 2005.

Temporary stationing of 2-2 ID now is operationally imperative to ensure the Army is postured to fully support its strategic commitments. Additionally, the 2-2 ID will transform to a campaign-quality force with joint and expeditionary capabilities that meet the demands of combatant commanders.

Fort Carson was selected based on existing facility capacities, available training space, and current locations of similar units. Family members of the unit’s soldiers will soon begin relocating to Fort Carson. This restationing decision will provide stability and predictability to Soldiers and their families’ lives and supports the Army’s plan to stabilize the force. This stationing action does not involve the relocation of any Department of Defense civilian authorizations.

Earlier this summer the Department of Defense had announced that 2-2 ID would be part of the realignment of forces overseas and would not return to its bases in South Korea, but no U.S. destination was announced. The Army will address permanent stationing through the Base Realignment and Closure 2005 analysis.

1. sounds like they are being brought home to a temporary base in
CO instead of Korea (where they were permantantly stationed previously)

sounds like they are going to get retrained for Afghanistan (why else put them in the mountains?)

but I really am just guessing

13. Ft. Carson isn't really in the mountains.
There are a few hills around, but the base itself is located on the plains.

Curious.

2. Translating mil speak
When the unit finishes its deployment in Iraq, it will come to Fort Carson, insteand of returning to its base in Korea...

This also means that they are about to relocate all the families... to Fort Carson...

Oh yes, they are also considering closing or realigning fort carson in 2005 so the unit may or may not have to move in 2005

They are also going to break it into Regimental Combat Team sized units, self sufficient for rapid deployment

Bear in mind the last time we used RCTs was WW II, and we stopped using them since they were not that effective

Hope I have straightened you as a pretzel

5. Thanks
I don't understand why we would lessen a force in Korea. I don't think these guys are being replaced.

6. That's what I thought was odd ...

Thought I might be misreading it.

I knew we'd redeployed units from Korea to Iraq, but I can't figure out why the entire unit is now having its base of operations changed to the US proper when there doesn't seem to be any new deployments to Korea.

11. They're being re-deployed ...
... so they can support a military takeover of the country by Bush.

That's precisely where the extension of my paranoia was leading. I need my :tinfoilhat: now. :-)

8. Maybe a couple of reasons....
First, the South Koreans don't much like having us there. Second, it's at least conceivable, given this nasty bunch in the White House now, they might be thinking that if they pull troops out to places like Japan and Okinawa, make like it's to accommodate the South Koreans, then start threatening the North Koreans full-tilt boogie, it might cause them to re-invade the South, whereupon we rush in and start the Korean War again.

M'self, I don't think that "axis of evil" shit was just a rhetorical device--these guys are convinced that they have the right to use force unilaterally anywhere in the world they please.

9. But NK said that they would bomb Japan.
That's another reason why this doesn't make sense.

10. Do you really think that would make a difference to...
... Bush and Company?

Also, that presumes that North Korea has nuclear weapons, and that's still not certain--there's enough disinformation floating around in this country that one can't be sure. The IAEA says, essentially, not yet, best as they can figure.

From what I've read of some inspectors' published notes on trips to North Korea, their nuclear program is a mess--short of equipment, hardware problems, spills, and the condition of the fuel rods indicates they've had lots of problems with keeping the reactor going properly.

All in all, it doesn't sound like a country with a production line up and running.

And, what have we heard about both Iraq and Iran, sequentially? "They're months away--the problem is imminent."

And, one of the biggest U.S. investors in South Korea is Carlyle (they own communications firms there along with a significant share of the KorAm Bank)--what would an overthrow of the North Koreans mean for development profits with the U.S. taxpayers funding rebuilding there?

Just a few things to chew on. :)

7. Weren't RCTs also...
... used for a while in the Korean war? As I recall, there was the 24th, and there was at least one airborne RCT (187th?). Maybe a few more.

Still, it's part of a general plan to spread conflict everywhere, very quickly and to create new Special Forces-style units of regiment size. Watch such units get spread out all over Latin and South America as trainers and "advisers."

My guess is that the rest of the 2nd ID gets reformed and sent to Japan.

Cheers.
