I hope this O'Reilly vs The Daily Show thing keeps escalating.
O'Reilly seems to think he's the savior of modern journalism, the last remaining "hard news man". And Jon Stewart makes no secret of the fact that he's a fake anchor of a fake news show. So it's supremely ironic that the "fake" Daily Show has won a Peabody while O'Reilly has to lie about winning one, and the Daily Show audience is more educated than the average late-night TV viewer.

Jon's analysis last night of O'Reilly's interview with Bush was a huge step towards the Daily Show becoming a legitimate watchdog for the "real" media. O'Reilly hates it when people check his work, or even imply that he might not be The Best Newsman In The World, and The Daily Show is at its best when it exposes pompous assholes as being pompous assholes. And we all know assholes don't come much more pompous than Bill O'Reilly.

So I really want O'Reilly to keep fanning the fires with this thing. I really don't think he's astute enough to realize he'll only be helping Jon the same way he helped Al Franken, so this can only end well for the good guys. I say Bring It On!!!

1. O'Reilly is supposed to be on the Daily Show soon
I wouldn't be surprised if he backs out, he's such a big baby when it comes to criticism!

31. can't wait
O"Reilly is such an arrogant f*** and Jon Stewart is disarmingly amiable while he tears his conservative guests a new one.

3. It is pretty funny
I was thinking last night about O'Reilly and how funny it is to think that if he (and his viewers) didn't really understand the news issues - that they might think TDS is just BS or something. They probably don't get the jokes, or anything.

4. I sensed last night...
Edited on Thu Sep-30-04 10:58 AM by DakotaDemocrat
...was a turning point in the show, and your view, that they will become the news reporters on news reporters.

The Ralph Reed segment where Ralphie was listing all the things that the dictator did, Jon was nodding and said, while Ralph was still listing off things:

"That's right, Kim Jong-il"

That was classic.

15. Two other good lines from the Reed interview...
Re: direction Bush is taking the country... "it scares me"

And subtly commenting on Reeds' statement that "economy, jobs, creating economic opportunity for people" were important factors in this election.... "so, you think he'll do that, too, next time?"

Not only can he think of a comeback, but he can couch it in a way that is hysterically funny.

36. Kim Jong-il ---- my husband and I both cracked up laughing
and couldn't stop laughing. My husband and I watch the re-run shown at 7pm the following day. For us it's like somepeople watch the newshour everynight except we watch TDS. Our baby just about is asleep and it's time to turn on TDS. I love it! And I could really care less about Prime time TV anymore.... the only thing I really care to watch is Jon Stewart.

6. TDS already is a legitimate watchdog for the "real" media
The reason it doesn't seem that way is because the "real" media is clueless about how or why it came to be.

Look, TDS is watched by more people in the "Gen-X" and "Gen-Y" demographics than any other "news" outlet, by far. And those who DO watch TDS aren't watching it solely for comedy, they're watching it to stay informed as well.

The "real" news outlets try and pass this off as proof of how misinformed the younger generations are. What they don't realize is that younger people tend more toward TDS because they don't suffer hypocrisy easily, and TDS is the ONE outlet that will call "bullshit" on stuff that stinks rather than leaving it unchallenged under the aim of remaining "objective".

TDS is a powerful force out there, don't doubt it for a second. While it doesn't need to be built-up, it is obviously only getting stronger.

23. TDS etc...
Since this election has begun I've been getting more involved in politics and reading up on everything going on. I'm a new voter and do like to be informed and all that, and I've found I love watching the Daily show so now I never miss it (that and Tough Crowd). I love the daily show cause Jon still gives you the news but he also adds some comedy into it, so I can still stay informed of what's going on. I also like that about "Tough Crowd" too. I do still like to watch Debroah Norville and Joe Scarbrough on MSNBC and every once in a while "Hardball" depending who's on it and if I'm interested. Other than that for news I don't really watch anything else unless it's about local news. XOXO.

:hi: :hi: :hi:

What I find funniest is Stewart's faux humility in face of all the recognition: "ANOTHER award? Oh, geez, don't you guys GET it? We're a FAKE news show--it's all a joke! Stop this, you're embarassing me!"

If he really meant that, of course, he'd refuse to accept on the grounds that the awards were meant for and deserved by "real" journalists. But there's no hiding that twinkle in his eyes. He may be Mr. Modesty on the outside, but beneath the surface, he's bouncing off the walls, he's so happy!

7. He'll go on and do the same 60 minutes shitck.....
Keep it toned down and lie his ass off just like he did to Wallace:

1. I still might vote for Kerry.
2. Gay people should have rights to any civil unions or marriages.
3. I'm for gay adoption over leaving the child in the system.
4. Maria Shriver started here career in the lucrative LA market while I had to claw my way to a $10 million per year job.

Tune in and watch as O'Really does his Jekyll and Hyde number.

She started in a much smaller market in Pennsylvania if I remember correct as stated later by Mike Wallace. O'Reilly is always on this "I started out as a poor boy" routine--even lies about where he was born.

If CBS can be made to buckle, is there a chance that Comedy Central will pull Jon Stewart if he crosses some kind of line?

Who owns Comedy Central?

26. Not always true
Donahue had the highest-rated program on MSNBC when they gave him the boot.

While I think it's highly unlikely Stewart and TDS would ever get the hook, you can never underestimate the shifting whims of a media conglomerate.

28. yes but they pulled donahue
because they didnt want to be branded as the antiwar channel. They felt that was a losing stradegy as a war approached. They felt overall it would hurt the channel more than help it. It was a monetary decision, maybe the wrong one, but the argument holds water.

27. So was the Spin Room for CNN, and Crossfire before it was halved
and put in a dead time slot. Donahue was leading too.
In CNN's case, we know unka Dick made calls. MSNBC declared that keeping Donahue would be inappropriate after 911 - so they got Savage instead.

to boycot Comedy Central... it's his favorite thing to do when he doesn't like something or someone, even theough he says it's un-murkin'...
