Saddam was an ally on the war on terror
Edited on Thu Sep-30-04 09:30 AM by noahmijo
The truth hurts dammit, and I know you all here at DU know this but probably don't dare to say this in public but let's just say it already let's just get down to the freakin truth.

Taking out Saddam makes about as much sense as trying to take out Stalin after Nazi Germany declares war on us.

Sure Stalin was a bad guy and all but the fact of the matter is his biggest enemy at the time was Nazi Germany just like us so you know what we did.

I am not suggesting that we should've made nice with good ol Saddam (we tried that before didn't work out so well) but at the same time, let's be straight the majority of the people he tortured and had killed were because they were part of radical Islamic factions. The Sunnis and the Shiites who feared nothing not even death, and they hated Saddam and eachother, and were Islamic extremists.

So put simply we used all these resources and lives to remove a man who made it a hobby of torturing and killing off largely the very same types that are trying to kill us today.

What part of this do the simpletons of America not understand? I know I know every part.

Well that's okay we're building a democracy right? I mean sure it will eventually become an Islamic Republic considering the new govt there wants to implement Sharia Law, but hey Al-Queda sure is happy with that!

4 more years 4 more years!!

..is your friend". it hurts in the long run.

2. Neither am I and that's not what I said

I know I seem to see with the headline of the thread, but really what I am saying overall is the fact that if we're to root out and destroy those responsible for 9-11 and those who are actively trying to kill us the LAST thing that should've been done was the invasion of a nation whose leader HATED those would be linked to Al-Queda or Islamic extremist groups.

I know most if not all of DU knows this but I still say we need to shoot this message out more, it's pretty much the only thing I've found that gets the freeps minds to think if only for 5 seconds.

And I want it repeated over and over again SHARIA LAW IS BEING PUSHED ON IRAQ HOW DOES THIS HELP OUR WAR ON TERRA?

3. Thanks for offering this view of the situation . .
You are so right. We are living in a bizzaro world where no-one is asking the right questions. Instead, everyone is concerned if we've stirred up such a hornets nest that we'll be stuck there. Sure, that's a valid concern.

But the reality is as you have stated it. A smart government working for our interests - rather than to promote their own ideological ends - would have understood this, and would have skillfully used Saddam agaist our ultimate enemies (radical Islam) and for our interests.

Instead, we've alienated the whole world against us, greatly increased the power and influence of radical Islam in the region - and managed to get 1050 Americans killed with 5000 or more horribly injured. And so far it's only cost us $200 billion.

I guess that's what you get to do when you hit the trifecta.

4. Sir or Miss why do you hate America?
;)

Yea I mean I hate to be the one to say it I be no means am endorsing Saddam as some sort of noble ally, (the headline I used was more satirical) but the fact of the matter is of all the nations to put pressure on given that the nature of our enemies are in fact radical Islamic extremists, Saddam's was the last nation that should've gotten our full attention.

5. Agreed. Why we took out one of the only secular gov'ts
in the M.E. is unknown to me. Now we're going to have a brand spanking new Islamic Republic. Just what we needed.

6. We never stopped to say that !
He was hated by the Islamists because his regime was secular. Saddam refused the islamic implantation in Iraq and defended all religions. You can see now the life of the Christians in the "new" Iraq !

He was a dictator. But the USA didn't lead a struggle against many other tyrants before because they put many of them onto their throne.
