Proving that seven is their lucky number, the goofball punksters of Green Day have notched their first number one album with their seventh studio release, American Idiot.

Since their breakthrough 1994 disc Dookie, the Bay Area rockers have released several albums that sold well but never actually topped the charts, most recently peaking at number four with 2000's Warning. American Idiot also scored the band's biggest single-week sales, moving 267,000 copies for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen SoundScan numbers released today. The disc also made number one debuts in Australia, Canada, Japan and the U.K. for combined worldwide sales topping the 1 million mark.

At radio, the album's title track already topped the Modern Rock Chart and cracked the Top 10 on the Rock Chart. The band also got a boost last week by performing on an especially highly rated episode of the Late Show with David Letterman, which also featured presidential candidate John F. Kerry.
