Automatic weapon used in Detroit
How long did it take for the ban to be lifted before the first shooting?

1. Automatic weapons are still banned
The Assault weapon ban did not address automatic weapons in any way.

3. Probably a semi-automatic. Reporters may not know difference.

Wait for more details.

And sounds like the description of the weapon came from a witness. Probably not under the best circumstances, and probably from someone not knowledgable about guns.

4. I dont think it is related.

I have had semi automatic weapons since 83 and have never been tempted to use them improperly. What the cosmetic ban did was say one could not use telescoping or folding stocks, hi capacity mags, flash supressors and bayonet mounts.

I defy Congress to put a real ban in place. I don't think they have the courage to do so.

We need more info than " and was carrying a steel blue, automatic gun.".

You could have been describing an UZI or an old 45 Cal ACP .

Real automatics require an FFL to own. We are talking about B A Rs or Full Auto M-16s or well you get the point. This has to be a semi auto. It could have been a pistol.

Fully automatic weapons have been banned/heavily regulated since 1934 under the National Firearms Act. The AWB that just expired has nothing to do with fully automatic firearms, AKA machine guns.
