Is Target an exploitative chain like WalMart is?
In that they sell mostly foreign-made merchandise and pay their employees peanuts? (As well as wipe out all the mom&pop Main Street businesses?)

There's a Target near where I live, but I've been hesitant to step foot in there for fear that it's just like WalMart.

1. To me, it's not like Wal-Mart at all.
Edited on Fri Sep-24-04 03:30 PM by PROGRESSIVE1
First of all it's much cleaner and brighter. Also, their staff is more knowledgeable as to where things are in the store. Their bathrooms are cleaner and their prices are similar to those of Wal-Mart. Target is ONLY a few cents more that Wal-Mart so I shop there instead. Also, I have heard nothing bad about their treatment of employees. Target has a better and more diverse selection of electronics too!!!

COSTCO is the best in every aspect and they are run by Democrats!!!

7. I would have to agree
I stepped into one today for the first time, about crapped my pants when I saw that they sold iPods (something wal-mart should get a kick in the ass for for not carrying anything apple) and walked in and was bombarded with read colors and that little dog every where.

Oh and the 60 seconds it takes for people to come to help you, that is no shit. It's less...:) found that out today.

9. Run by Democrats? Good deal.
Then they must know how to treat their employees fairly as well as how to balance their books!:)

5. At least they're clean and competent
One can also check out of a Target in 5 minutes as opposed to 15 minutes sometimes at WalMarts.

3. Costco appears to be another good chain
I've heard that management tends to be on the liberal side, and from what I have seen in the stores, that appears to be true. The book table near here had lots of anti-* books (including the new Kitty Kelly book). The nearby BJ's had several stacks of "Unfit for Command" scattered among the other books, and many fewer anti-* books.

Also, I hear Costo pays employees well.

and like most kids its' burning a hole in her pocket, so shetells me there is something that she wants but it's only at walmart. "Find it on the internet and i'll pay for it myself", thats exactly what she did.

6. The headquarters is 10 blocks from my house
in Minneapolis. My dad was a buyer foor Target for 17 years, and I worked there in high school. It is not exploitive, at least not any more than any other corporation. They treat people well, the retirement plan is VERY good, beneftis are pretty good but not great.

Costco is a GREAT chain. They pay their cashiers 20 bucks an hour, a truly liveable wage.

8. My wife works for Target and I haven't seen any signs of Wal-Mart-like
behavior. It seems like a pretty progressive company, and they donate big bucks to local schools.

12. I love costco!
Except you can't use credit cards. I read in the Wall St. Journal that the company was given advice to further its bottom line by cutting employee costs,(i.e. their relatively high salaries for retail), if your a business they talk badly about in the WSJ generally they are good to their folks, they invest in their employees and have promotion from within.

11. I worked at Target for a few years....
...A crappy retail job is a crappy retail job, but as far as they go Target was pretty good. They paid well above minimum wage at the time, and they donate to a lot of Juvenile Diabetes Charities and local schools.
Plus they sell Spongebob Boxer shorts, so there ya go.

21. I have the same situation here where I live
except ours is a Super Target next door to a Super Walmart. Naturally, I prefer the Target. It's very nice inside but I did not know they sold iPods there. I'll have to check that out.

18. I heard that Target is owned by the French. I would prefer
to give my money to the French then to the Chinese (Walmart imports over 80% of all Chinese goods imported into the U.S.). China owns most of our national debt, too.

26. Meh. It's a big corporation, they all contribute to the
Repigs. I favor them over Wal-Mart because they are not so heinous to their people, AND they have much cleaner stores and nicer stuff. They also do contribute cash back to local causes.
