1. And Chicago goes without AAR.
But we do get 50,000 watts of Rush, Hannity and some local snotty chicks all repeating the exact same talking points for 20 broadcasting hours every day.

3. Don't give up hope
CC owns some signals down there, and they're hopping on AAR like mad. I sense they'll flip 1690 soon. Somebody's gonna do it.

I watch a few radio boards, and as soon as I hear something, I'll let everyone know.

In the meantime, if you're around the state like, you'll pick up 97.3. It's a pretty strong signal.

4. Well, when the All-Tejano spanish language station wouldn't go AAR
I did lose hope. Not that there isn't a market for All Tejano spanish language station, but there must already be three or four on the AM dial. I need something for drive time! I want my AAR!

12. Well, you could keep an eye on these for updates and rumors
Chicago radio message board:

http://www.radio-info.com/mods/posts?Board=chicago

Robert Feder's Sun-Times column:

http://www.suntimes.com/index/feder.html

As for Clear Channel, since they're the most likely candidate for AAR, here's what they own in Chicago:

WGCI-FM - 107.5 - R&B
WVAZ-FM 102.7 - "V-103" Adult R&B
WNUA-FM 95.5 - "Smooth Jazz 95.5"
WLIT-FM 93.9 - "The Lite"
WKSC-FM 103.5 - "Kiss FM"
WGCI-AM 1390 - Gospel
WRLL-AM 1690 - "Real Oldies"

Don't hold your breath for the FMs. They're ratings monsters. 1390 does well with gospel. Which leaves a struggling AM oldies station called WRLL. Good signal, too. If CC picks up AAR in Chicago, it will be on 1690.

As for other stations, here is a list of some of the noteable Chicago signals:

17. Here's some irony
Just checked on RadioInfo, and it seems like 950 (AAR's former affiliate before that big fiasco with the owner) just lost their client, who neglected to renew. I guess it's all music and PSAs now.

Shoulda kept AAR.

19. Their ratings went up with AAR
The sole Arbitron trend report with AAR showed the station went from obscurity to crack a 1.0 share.

The owner was kind of a scam artist. Doesn't sound like a well-run outfit.

And now the group that licensed the station from him a month ago suddenly pulled out.

I guess that's the problem with running a radio-station-for-rent.

Okay. I'm old. But it will be nice to have something other than Celine Dion on 97.3 (again)...

10. Yeah, I remember WLPX
And the old QFM. Back when rock radio was cool.

Lazer 103 doesn't do it for me. And Rock 102 is good in spurts.

13. Here in Portland
the AAR affiliate KPOJ is announcing they are going to up the watts on the station from 5,000 to 25,000 soon. Maybe if some of these low-power AAR stations are popular enough, like KPOJ is here, they can boost the wattage.

14. That depends solely on the FCC and the owners
Edited on Sat Sep-18-04 11:21 AM by RatTerrier
Ratings and popularity have nothing to do with it. The FCC could care less who listens.

I believe that KPOJ has been planning a boost for some time, likely predating AAR.

Stations can only upgrade if there are no other conflicts with neighboring signals and shared frequencies. If that was the case, every station would boost their wattage.

AAR is on a lot of low-powered signals, as kind of a last resort to get anyone to listen to these dog stations. But if they start doing well, they could be moved to more powerful signals, if deemed advantagious. It's happening already in Minneapolis, where the owner of the local station that airs Franken just bought a more powerful signal (purchased 950 from Infinity) and is planning to move.

I don't know much about this stuff, so it's good to get the low-down from someone in the know. :hi:

16. I used to work in radio
Until I realized that eating and paying rent were more important than being on the air. That, and radio's been a pretty shitty business for the past decade.

Still keep up on the goings-on in the industry.
