Located a Selectric II. What else do I need?
I've found a source where I can get an IBM Selectric II typewriter. I've read that was available at the time of the memos whose legitimacy is being questioned. If I were to try to demonstrate how the proportional fonts and superscripting can be done on such a machine, what else would I need? Which specific font ball, for example?

Not positive I'll try this, just toying with the idea.

2. I don't think it was a Selectric II...
...but rather an Executive or Selectric Composer. If you wanted to see if it could do proportional fonts, though, you could just type like five "i"s and then five "w"s on the next line and see whether or not they line up.

5. The ball it had was not proportional.
Edited on Wed Sep-15-04 02:38 PM by Ready4Change
I thought I'd read that fixed vs proportional spacing was a function of the font ball. Or perhaps it was a function of a different version?

10. No, it's not a function of the type ball.
The Selectric Composer definitely had PS. Perhaps a later version of the "regular" Selectric did, but I'd already moved into the wonderful world of Standalone WP by then.

The type balls had "pitch"--usually 10 or 12. The typewriter had to be set to the same pitch or the result looked really weird.

11. Do nothing - Only Selectric Composer and Executive key machine did
proportional.

Beside the latest - and indeed the most likely - scenario is the the contents - which have been confirmed by the Secr - now 86 years old - of those memos was in handwritten form in his desk when she retired in 79. I's likely that Killian had them typed up between 79 and 81 when he died. And they were then typed up post 79 - at that point on a Wang or Composer setup.

There is no proof that the Bush's had Killian killed in 81 when he refused to handover the memos, with Bush taking the memos, and therefore being able to release them as "forgeries" in case of anyone questioned W's "service" - and that Burketts photocopies were not known to the Bushes - explaining why he was not also killed.

Again there is no proof.

But then there is no proof that the above is incorrect.....

12. Problem
If these were typed later the handwritten document better be available. I don't like this scenario a bit.

14. Look for a 'Courier Legal' Ball
that should have the marvelous, elusive creature known as the superscript 'th.'
