PLEASE HELP! Debunking this email
On another discussion list I'm on - not political although it is turning political - someone forwared the big email that starts like this:

Learn these facts to properly debate our poor misguided friends and
> family before election time !!!
>
> There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq during the month of
> January.....
> In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the month of January.
>
> That's just one American city, about as deadly as the entire war torn country of
> Iraq. When some claim President Bush shouldn't have started
> this war, state the following got us into World War II
>
> Germany never attacked us; Japan did. From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost,
> an average of 112,500 per year.
>
> Truman...finished that war and started one in Korea.
> North Korea never attacked us.From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost,
> an average of 18,334 per year.>

and it goes on and on from there.

I tried Snopes but couldn't find it. Can someone point to a debunker?

I already addressed the first 2 points.

thanks!!!!

1. LOL, I've gotten tired debunking this one
Someone saved some links to previous discussions. I'll give you a kick, and maybe they'll post those links again.

Hint: we didn't declare war on Germany. We declared war on Japan because of a little thing called Pearl Harbor. Has the sender of the e-mail ever heard of that? So, Germany declared war on us.

2. How about this
In January of 2004, there were Zero WMD in Detroit.
There were also zero WMD found in Iraq.

The US Federal government built 45 schools in Iraq and Zero in Detroit.

Bush is spending billions in Iraq and sending the bill to Detroit.

3. "moral equivalency"
This is an example of the "moral equivalency" or "moral relativity" that the right-wing wackos have charged against the left.

For years and years, the right has called the left immoral for this very reason. Now, the wingnuts sink so low that they use the morally depraved "body counts" to defend Dear Leaders horrid war.

Hypocrite is not enough of a word to describe these self-righteous slimy spitballs.

4. Softballs!
On Detroit Murders - Need to compare apples to apples. The soldiers in Iraq are not civilians - they are POLICMEN. How many policemen died in Detroit last year? And if we are going to talk about civilian murders, how many IRAQI civilians died last year?

On Germany in WWII - Um, last I checked, Germany declared war on the US - not the other way around.

On Korea - North Korea invaded South Korea and the US came to the aid of South Korea. Last I checked, no one in Iraq invited us to rescue them.

5. There were 39 SOLDIERS killed in Iraq
out of a total of 130,000. This number does not include the Iraqis killed, so does not accurately reflect the number of people killed in Iraq. 39 out of a 130,000 is significantly more than 35 out of population of Detroit, so this is a completely fallacious argument with no basis in reality.

As already pointed out, Japan attacked us, we declared war on Japan, Germany declared war on us due to their treaty with Japan, and so on.

Korea was a UN action. The US is part of the UN. It's as simple as that.

6. How many suicide bombings were in Detroit?
How many innocent men, women, and children were killed in air assualts there?

How many kidnappings and executions?

When did a Protestant cleric in Detroit and his followers successfully fend off the US military?

I don't have the time or the patience to spend any more time on this.

7. I found a link that might help.
http://www.local8-0237.com/interesting_facts_rebuttal.htm

Not on snopes, although sometimes google finds stuff in snopes that isn't listed in the right place as far as I could tell. Not sure if snopes has it - couldn't find it.

I know I've seen it here a few times.
