Speech Fails to Sway These Undecideds

By Peter Slevin and Jonathan Finer
Washington Post Staff Writers
Saturday, September 4, 2004; Page A01

CLAYTON, Mo., Sept. 3 -- Half a dozen undecided voters who gathered here to watch President Bush's acceptance speech made it clear before he took the podium that they had serious doubts about his leadership and his political choices. After listening to 62 minutes of carefully crafted oratory, Christopher A. Jackson found himself leaning ever so slightly the president's way.

But, then, after listing all that bothered him about the speech, Jackson announced that he still wasn't sure.

I honestly don't trust the guy," said Jackson, 41, a businessman and registered independent.

In Goffstown, N.H., Kate Tullgren, 18, said she was undecided and might vote for Bush. Yet she greeted the speech with whispered sarcasm and scowls of incredulity. When Bush mentioned judicial appointments, she said, "What about Roe v. Wade, buddy?"

2. Zogby Polls
Anyone else think they're questionable? People sign up for them and then they get sent emails from Zogby then they click the link and fill them out. Seems like a web poll that gets Du'ed or freeped or whatever...or do they have like a million people that don't mind polling who they send things out to randomly?

Still doesn't seem right.

5. Zogby's methods are controversial but very accurate.
Zogby predicted the 1992, 1996, 2000 Presidential Elections correctly. Only he detected the last minute surge in favor of President Al Gore and he was right, Gore won!

Zogby also detected the last minute upswing in support for the Rethugs in the 2002 elections. Again he was right.

6. That's not the Zogby poll quoted...
While Zogby conducts on-line "interactive" polls, they mainly do directed telephone polls, and that's what is being reported here.

9. Zogby only releases the online poll numbers for comparative reasons
to the traditional polling.

7. You are not very aware of the methodology behind Zogby's online polls
It ain't the cnn.com/wolf poll. It is impossible to DU or freep the Zogby online poll unless you consider giving your opinion DU'ing/freeping the poll. Zogby is pioneering online polling in an era when diminishing numbers of people are reachable on their home landline phone. Eventually, it will become more accurate than the traditional method of polling via landline phone.

11. would be better if you checked more thoroughly into Zogby methods
the internet polls are hardly all they do ... are your comments by any chance more tongue-in-cheek? ... something leaves me uneasy here ...

4. Trust Zogby
Edited on Sat Sep-04-04 05:19 PM by Gman
I feel he's the only one interested in having real, scientifically valid samples, hence his results. He's the ONLY poll that nailed Gore winning the popular vote in 2000. The polls showing Bush with a double digit lead are as scientific as creationism and have the same intent.

And, the freeper lurkers here will agree with that last statement for all the wrong reasons.
