Women in Iraq Decry Decision To Curb Rights
Council Backs Islamic Law on Families

BAGHDAD, Jan. 15 -- For the past four decades, Iraqi women have enjoyed some of the most modern legal protections in the Muslim world, under a civil code that prohibits marriage below the age of 18, arbitrary divorce and male favoritism in child custody and property inheritance disputes.

Saddam Hussein's dictatorship did not touch those rights. But the U.S.-backed Iraqi Governing Council has voted to wipe them out, ordering in late December that family laws shall be "canceled" and such issues placed under the jurisdiction of strict Islamic legal doctrine known as sharia.

3. Saw that coming
The Repugs keep repeating the mantra "do they wish Saddam was still in power?" as if that's the only question that matters in regards to Iraq (ignoring completely the fact that we attacked a country that was no threat to us and that nearly 1000 American men and women and countless Iraqi citizens have died because of it).

But who didn't see the distinct possibility of yet another fundamentalist Islamic state apppearing out of the ashes? I argued with my father before the war ever started that if we went over there, we would either have to keep an occupying force there for who knows how long or some Taliban like government would come into power. He thought I was nuts.

Guess I'll be sending him THAT link.

5. Iraqi women do wish Saddam was still in power
They are now being repressed by US puppet regime. so much for civil rights and "Freedom". They aren't free if they aren't free. Women of Iraq have had a huge setback and no one wants to talk about it.

6. yeah, they used to have alot, now they don't have any.
I knew this was coming, I knew it I knew it I knew it.

What is the benefit to the U.S. of having these patriarchal top down societies? Does anyone know of anyone who has answered this in book or essay form? We are supposed to be a democracy, but yet we topple democracies left and right, and make dictatorships worse...is it because the powers that be know that in a monarcy or whatever if the power is concentrated in the hands of a few ruling families, they will whore out anything and everything they control resource wise as long as they can protect their own families and the land they themselves live on???

This happens so often as to not be accidental, it can't be. The powers in this country want the resources of every country in private hands, so they can exploit it at will, the only requirement being the exchange of money. They don't want democracy, here or anywhere else. They want to limit territorial power into the hands of a few rich males per territory, so they can rule the freaking world. Is there a book that covers this pattern, that connects the dots??
