U.S war dead now at 1,012
Apparently we have already surpassed the anticipated 1,000 mark, according to GlobalSecurity.org. Incredibly, 1,112 Americans were wounded in August alone.

4. Well
The 1,000 mark everybody is talking about refers to the number of deaths of US soldiers, not the number of wounded.

The best place for these statistics is http://icasualties.org

According to this site 978 American soldiers have died in Iraq. We will probably pass the 1,000 mark sometime this month.

5. 1,112 wounded
The wounded, how many left really horribly scared for life?
People get and watch Jonny Got His Gun, show it to your friends.
P.S.: The pop-up ad for University degree discounts for service people was black humor funny.

6. This explains the difference in the numbers

http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room//index.html

Juan Cole (with an assist from a reader) notes on his blog today that the anticipated death of the 1,000th American soldier in Iraq already happened sometime in the last few weeks. According to the military and foreign policy watchdog GlobalSecurity.org, by the end of August 1,012 U.S. service members had died.

Why haven't you heard about it? In part, statistical methodology. GlobalSecurity.org states in its methodology section "at times our total count can be rather larger than the numbers reported by some news organizations. We list a number of people as unidentified pending notification of next of kin. We count people as soon as they get killed, while others wait until they are named."

While the "official" 1000th death will probably be announced sometime this month, there's another big story out there along with that somber milestone. In August, GlobalSecurity.org reports, the number of U.S. soldiers wounded in Iraq doubled to 1,112 from the July total of 533, making it the worst month for American casualties since the war began.

8. You know...
This doesn't sound right.

The site I linked to DOES list soldiers reported as killed even before they have been identified pending next of kin. You will see that if you look at the site. GobalSecurity.org seems to be "projecting" deaths or something.

I think it is important for the debate that we refer to reliable sources. The 1,000 mark will come soon enough, sadly. No need to dilute the event with a questionable or over-eager source.

11. In The Methodology
they mention
"April was the cruelest month, and by the end of the month the Pentagon had named 120 who had been killed, while we counted over 150 deaths. With closer analysis, we were able to conclude that some of the apparent 35 unidentifieds were probably multiple reports of single incidents."

9. What quaoar said...
They keep a list of Named (currently 977) and a list of reported (currently 35) ** Reported Killed but Unidentified Pending Notification of Next of Kin
Hence the number being over 1000
