Let me explain, as a native Brooklyner.

"Fuhgetaboutit" is not an expression of disagreement or surprise. It is not the same as "Oh no she di'n't," or "Get ahhta here." Rather, the phrase has two closely coordinated connotations:

1) An expression of agreement with the obvious or the thoroughly expected, usually with a cynical twinge. It is much closer to "What else is new," than anything else I've seen here:

Guy Standing on Street: Hey, you hear Joey got arrested again?
Passerby: Fuhgetaboutit

2) An expression of quantitative magnitude, meaning "a lot."

Bodega Owner: Choo know how much Yeeter makin' for those Nike spots?
Bodega Customer, Buying Cigar: Fuhgetaboutit.

Not one of the expressions I've seen in this thread quite get the sense of "fuhgetaboutit." I'd be curious to see if any other native New Yorkers agree.

"fuhgetaboutit" is not and has never been a common expression in African American speech. You may be confusing it with "Forget you" or some such. "Fuhgetaboutit" has always been and remains associated primarily with Italian Americans in the New York area and the spreading of their idioms into a primarily white, working class population. "Fuhgetaboutit" does not now, nor has it ever, meant "Fuck it" or "Fuck that." Never. That's simply not the connotation of the expression.

I've heard "Forget that," and "forget you," and "forget that shit," etc., but never "fuhgetaboutit" in the classic sense, or even with a slant. I'll continue to claim that people are missing its meaning - as it functions in context. "Fuhgetaboutit" is not interchangable with any of the substitutes listed here - at all. Some people have said it is interchangeable with "Get outta here." It is not. Some have said it is interchangeable with "Whatever." It is not. Some have said it is interchangeable with "C*ck the f*ck s*ck, Chuck. Wot da f*ck 'er youse talkin' about?" It is not. It simply is not.

Here's a situation in which you would use "fuhgetaboutit": You know that Mario's Deli makes the best cappicola and mortadella sandwiches there are. These sandwiches are divine, just fantastic. So, you bump into Vito, one of your boys from up the block, and he's eating a Mario's cappicola and mortadella sandwich. With his mouthful, he says:

"Dese fuckin' sandwiches are great. How fuckin' good are dey?"

You say:

"Fuhgetaboutit."

You are expressing an acknowledgment of the obvious. You are NOT expressing disbelief or anger. Acknowledgment of the obvious is the classical usage, and the one Al Franken must be referring to, since it is the real New York usage of the term. Now, can you substitute any other phrase included in this thread? No. You can't say "Get outta here," which expresses surprise; you can't say "Whatever," which expresses (paradoxically) annoyed indifference; you can't say "Fuck that," which expresses disapproval or anger. So, none of those works as a synonym for "fuhgetaboutit." They're just wrong.
